Fit snow, winter tires, winter driving questions??
LOL. Good luck. If you ever find real good ones let me know. Mine have a lot of pitmarks from salt etc.
Use front winter tires only?
Hi all, I am sorry if this has been discussed a million times already, but how many of you will put winter tires only on the front?
The reason is yes I have seen track test where if you corner and brake with only front winter tires, you will have a spin out. But how many of us actually drive like that in the snow? If I don't have snow tire in the back, does that mean i will spin 180 degree while braking in a straight line?
What I don't understand is why tire companies insist on having 4 winter tires, while it is safe to have snow chains only on the driving wheel.

If you overbrake you will get a spinout on winter or summer tires on the rear and winter on the front. if you are driving on a curve, especially a down hill one, the spinout is almost guaranteed. Or at least a sideslip. The difference in mph is not very great either. Lots of Fits in NC mountains seem to do quite well on front winter tires only in snowy weather. The amount of spin is dependent on the speed and road so there's no set degree of rotation.

As for chains, they're supposed to be temporary and you're not supposed to drive that fast with them anyway.

So with new snow tires being so much better now days, I say 4 snows or no snows. Check the craigslist and classifieds for some used ones if you want to save a buck...but do it right.
at the last minute pretty much i'm in need of winter tires and steelies for my '07 - I've got someone selling 13" late model civic steelies with winter tires on 'em for cheap.
I'm searched the thread before you guys flame me for it but I can't find it anywhere, as well as other forums... will 13" rims clear the calipers/brake components on an 07 GD3????
Thanks!
Nick

Its not the best idea but you can drive a lowered car in snow. If you spend the extra money and get coilovers you can adjust the ride hit before and after winter.
My car is lowered on Skunck2 coilovers, my guess is 2" or so
I had no problems on this day, did a little plowing but had no issues driving.

This snow storm was the worst one he have had in problable 10 years. I was plowing alot more snow and pushing threw walls of snow plouse would leave. During the snow storm I only got stuck once, when I was going into my unplowed neighborhood. One of the biggest problems about being that low was I ended up having alot of snow packed up under the car, in just about ever nook and cranny. I have finaly gotten a good amount of it out and the car has stopped vibrating at idle but there is still snow packed up there in places.

I have an 08 Sport and I just picked up a set 14x5.5 wheels with 175/65/14 falken eurowinter tires... Anyone running this set up? My UPS tracking # says i'm getting them in on Tuesday. I'm expecting it to look funny.
We're getting hammered here in Central Illinois. About 4" of sleet mostly, but switching to snow later. We won't get as much as Chicago.
A month ago I noticed a set of Blizzaks on steel for sale on Craigslist. I called the owner yesterday, he brought them to work with him today, and I now have a slightly used TireRack winter package!
(2nd-hand thanks to Jim) The local shop offered to let my all-seasons melt and dry for a day or two. Nice customer service.
It's a minus set-up, so I'm running 185/65/14 on my 2007 Fit Sport. I can tell some improved snow handling and traction, but the biggest improvement is braking. Much shorter, and hardly any lockup.
I can't endorse these over other snow tires since I've not run snows in many years, but the improvement over all-season is easily noticeable.

Nice! I just installed my 14" set up on my Sport and it looks better than I thought! I only paid just around $400 for a set of brand new MB SevenX and 175/65/14 Falken Eurowinter tires. I'm ready for the mountain trip coming up in a month.
FWIW I've had my Sport since 1/15 and have run it hard in one major (5-6 inches) snowfall and the messy aftermath with the stock Dunlop 7000s and it goes and stops just fine. Surprisingly well, IMO.
At this point I may not even spring for snows, since we only have two more months of real winter left and I have a 4WD truck with winter rated M/T tires anyway.

I was thinking a set of snows this winter [first for the FIT] and decided not. I've had no problems, but then again I've had plenty of NE snowy winters. If I did get snows I would go aggressive and stud them all around. Screw the MPG's!
