Gas gauge issue - can anyone confirm something for me?
Gas gauge issue - can anyone confirm something for me?
So on my 2016 FIT, I recently went to fill it with gas at the station.
Problem is, when I went to fill it the pump didn't automatically shut off, resulting in wasted fuel all over the side of the car and the pavement - and with gas at over $6 a gallon/$2.25per liter...that really hurts.
I filed a complaint with the station which is still being dealt with. At least the manager confirmed there was a problem with the pump.
Now my problem is the fuel gauge seems to be "stuck" on the fullest reading.
I've done over 50 miles/80kms since the incident and all the fuel "bars" on the display are still showing as "full".
Usually by this point I've at least lost a couple "bars" of fuel from the gauge, but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
Can anyone confirm if their car's gauge drops at least a bar after driving the first 50miles/80kms?
I may have to claim damage to the tank/sending unit if this problem persists.
At this point I honestly don't know if the gauge is now broken.
thanks in advance

Well, I can't confirm so I'll start with that.
Clearly the tank is overfilled. Meaning that the float is probably under gas (as opposed to being under water). While this is not ideal and will effect the evaporator, it shouldn't cause permanent damage to my knowledge. I think that your car in Canada is the same as those in the U.S. in that the tank holds 10.6 gallons. I don't know how much more it can hold above that level. You know, the air gap that they like to have plus the filler tube. Add to that the fact that these cars get good mileage, it could still be at the top of the sending units range. I know that for me, 50 miles would be just over a gallon of gas. I would think that it should start to decrease very shortly.
Edit: Quick and dirty math says that half a tank is about 5.x gallons which makes a quarter tank just over 2.5 gallons and an eighth of a tank is about 1.25 gallons. 50 miles would be about an eighth of a tank but if the overfill status is above that....

Sorry to hear about your gas overflow. I always hate losing even a drip of fuel, plus I don't think it's good for the paint/clear coat. There are lots of tank capacity and/or fuel efficiency posts on FitFreak where various folks describe how much extra fuel (over 10.6 gallons) they can cram into their tank and the quite long fill tube on a Fit. I don't recall the amount off the top of my head, but I'm guessing it's well over a gallon. Most of those folks claim that it does no damage to the car or fuel system, so if you believe that then you shouldn't have any long-term consequences.
I agree with the previous reply that you're probably still using fuel that's above the typical amount in a full tank, which would explain why your gauge hasn't dropped yet. I would keep monitoring the situation and the gauge should start to drop soon. If it doesn't move after you've driven a distance equaling several gallons of fuel consumed then I would investigate further.

Thanks for the replies gents, I'll certainly continue to keep monitoring the situation.
Very true. That was my first thought when it happened as well
As a result my net stop was home where I got a very soft brush, some concentrated car wash soap and warm water mixture and went over the fender/bumper and splash guard area multiple times.
I continued lightly scrubbing and applying the soap mixture until the smell of gas was absent from the paint.

You can drive a very long distance before the fuel gauge will even move!
Some gas jockey decided to fill my car right way past the auto stop of the pump. I was driving on the highway and the gauge didn't budge for a long time and I knew what happened. I had to burn off the fuel as much as possible, so I took off ECO, put it in "S" and drove it at high revs.
I took photos. I managed to drive around 133km and it was still showing full. I drove almost 360km around half tank.
I was concerned that the overfill would damage the charcoal canister. I made a complaint to that gas station.
I believe the GK's charcoal canister is located in the engine bay and is designed to not be badly affected by overfilling, but I'm not 100% There was no smell of gas.
Lesson learned. Do not let anyone else fill your car.

Thanks to everyone on this thread.
After about a week of driving, I can confirm that the gauge has finally started to drop (as normal).
And as Action Jachson stated above, I'm certainly going to be more vigilant when filling my tank!
