Unhappy

I am really getting disappointed by my fuel efficiency... When the first tank from the dealership got about 25mpg, I was ok with that, as apparently the efficiency gets better as you break in the engine.

But now with over 1100 miles on the car, my last fillup being 5.371 gallons after only going 126.7 miles (23.58 mpg), and that 25mpg tank from the dealer being my best, and so many people getting nearly 30 mpg in city driving with a brand new Fit, I am beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with my car. I live in Pennsylvania, which is full of hills, and my daily commute is nearly 100% city driving, but I've lost my lead foot in an effort to make the car more efficient.

At what point can I expect my efficiency to get above 25mpg, or will it be this low forever? The fuel efficiency was one of the reasons I bought this car, and while i probably would have still bought it anyway, it seems that I am missing something I should have gotten with my Fit.

See my post at https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-...tml#post136137 for my complete mileage log, excluding the last tank. At least the last tank was slightly higher than my overall mpg of 23.11. I have not had the chance to do a highway-only test, but the one tank that was mostly highway was still only 25 mpg.

Wow

There are huge differences on this blog.
I really like some of the numbers (mifit) and the consistent tracking of some of the bloggers.
I get my Sport/ AT/ BOM tomorrow.
After reading this entire thread, I am still looking forward to geting my AT.
I want good mileage (30-35 is what I'm looking for), but why I want this car is... It's a Honda hatcback w/ the paddle shifters, unmatched safety (standard), huge cargo capacity, flexability, new design, fun to drive, good (i.e. safe) car for my teenager to learn on.
I understand most of the reasons each camp states for their good / bad mileage, but I don't understand the tire pressure differences.
What does the manual call for?
Why are alot of the owners finding under inflated tires?
To all...
Maybe there can be a swap meet for AT to MT owners?
Are there any MT owners who want to swap (not mine)?
Happy motoring...

So far I've gotten 29mpg and 26mpg, around 75% city.

I am unhappy. I am running the A/C a lot, which MAY explain it but **** the ratings are what 32/37??

I am thinking of returning it to the dealer for an inspection if I don't clear 30MPG on this tank and I doubt I will.

I am at a half a tank already and I've driven I think 130-140 miles. I am UNHAPPY.

I never redline and I often use the paddles to upshift.

My RSX Type-S got far better MPG than this (fully tuned, 206whp, I averaged 32MPG and this was with short blasts to 8600RPM) so I am unhappy at losing half my power and losing gas mileage too.

Give it some time to break in. I have been getting 31-33 with a low of 27.9 and a high of 34. Remember you are not going to get the fuel ratings untill the motor breaks in. As for your rsx getting 32 ti must be your tuning/kpro? because my modded/#4 rsx never gets into the 30 range.

Lots of people on this site get 30+ mpg from the first tank on. I hope I start seeing numbers like that soon. I'm averaging 23 mpg city, with nothing above 25.

Some of the mileage threads here were fairly disturbing to me because the huge variances between some of our cars by location. But I have recently discovered (thanks to kps) that:

Imperial (Canadian and UK) Gallon = 4.546 liter
US Gallon = 3.785 liter

To convert some of the mileage claims made on this board; from US to imperial, multiply by 1.20 (hey, my 35mpg just jumped to 42mpg), from imperial to US, multiply by 0.834 (48mpg is only 40mpg, and a lot more believable).

To make these comparisons valid at all, please identify the units of measure used. It does appear that most people are reporting in MPG(u)

Perhaps using MPG(i) or MPG(u) would make this easier to understand. Now I understand why the big push towards metric in the 1970's.

Eric

BTW, My 1990 Geo Metro 5M mentioned in another thread got over 51MPG(u) averaged over 130,000 miles. I guess they don't build them like that any more...

Yes, I had a fully tuned K-PRO unit. It was tuned by Kenny Tran of JoTech Motorsports in Dallas, TX.

I always averaged 30mpg+ and I used to beat on it, I swear.

I just filled up the tank for 24.8 mpg. That might not sound like a lot, but it was better than my previous highest of 24.3, plus I had spent an hour of idling at 0 mpg doing the ILP. I think I should be able to get about 27 mpg next time. Hopefully it'll keep getting better!

Good gas milage

My best tank was 35.5 mpg, tires boosted to 42psi mild driving. But the ride was unbearable on bad roads so im at 32psi and average around 29 to 31 per tank driving briskly city/ hwy mix. Hope that with the first oil chane the milagewill go up as i wont be using break in oil any more. Just a theory but im hopeing. Alos as the engine seats/ breaks in it should go up.

My first tank after doing the ILP has yielded me 24.9 mpg (186.8 miles on 7.501 gal). I hope it goes up a little faster than .1 mpg! That could simply be attributed to the auto-shutoff on the pump, since I went to a different gas station. Planning that long highway trip soon...

I am going to use the paddle shifters and shift at 2500-3000 rpms the whole next tank, and see what affect that will have.

New EPA mileage

I seem to get an average of 27.3 mpg with about 75% Freeway 70-75 mph.

I haven;t seen it on this Forum yet. Here is the link to the new EPA figures. 2008 Fuel Economy Tests
Old = 31/38 Combined 34
New = 27/35 Combined 30

With the amount of discrepancies between Fit's (with some numbers under 20mpg and others over 40mpg) with supposedly similar driving habits it's starting to sound like maybe Honda isn't doing too good of a job of standardizing. Maybe it's a computer problem that's feeding some of them more fuel under similar circumstances. Maybe it's feeding less air. Maybe it's a tranny problem. Whatever it is it appears to be a crap shoot. You buy a car and hope you get one of the good gas mileage ones.
Most of them probably get the average of around 30mpg combined but the people coming to this thread are here because of either very good or very bad mileage.
I don't think this is a new problem for Honda either. My mother bought a new Civic in 2001 and has never gotten over 26mpg in the city and she definitely drives like an old lady, she's in her mid 70's. :-)
I wonder if enough complaints were made to the Company or even to the BBB if it would help. Something like the 'Lemon Law'
I love my Fit but if I would have known the MT got such better mileage I would have got one. It cost me $800.00 extra to get the crappy mileage.

After 3 fillups

Just over 27mpg each time. Wish the tank was 12gal instead of 10.9. I find that even when it's on E there is still a couple of gallons left. And I do jackrabbit so I expected lower than 31/37. Mostly city miles.

I'm starting to average 35 mpg, which is up from the normal 33. Several possible factors:

1) Just passed 11,000 miles, engine feels great, is nicely broken in.

2) Have done 2 oil changes to date.

3) Temps are in the 70s-80s recently.

Still driving exclusively in S with paddle shifters, except when talking on the phone. I almost never let the engine below 3k until I'm ready to cruise, which means lots of 3rd and cruise in 4th until getting on the highway. Not to often that I use 5th unless goind down hill on street roads.

My initial mileage

The first tank after the dealer fill-up I used the paddle shifters exclusively on 70% stop and go and 30% highway and got 25 mpg. The second tank I did the same 70-30% but avoided paddles 100%, drove much more carefully/slowly/gently and got 30 mpg.

After 8,000 miles:

I just emptied the tank and filled up. Got 33 mpg, which is above my average of 30mpg. I'm riding mostly back roads averaging 45-60 mph. I wish I was getting more near 40 mpg. My sister has a 2007 Toyota Corolla Sport and is averaging 40 mpg. Her engine is .3 more liters than my Fit and she does more stop and go. I don't get it!! Oh well, at least I'm getting better mileage than my dad in the Ford Explorer...

My normal mileage is 30mpg per tank, that is mostly Boston traffic.

But we are on a road trip from Boston to Florida and before we hit traffic, the first half a tank was over 40mpg!

After the traffic and at the fillup we were at 36mpg Which is still way better than I have gotten.

I hope there is no more traffic the rest of the way there, because 40mpg is pretty kick ass!

AT Milage

4000 miles on car and 33-38 MPG all the time. Allot of mountain driving and some Freeway, city driving. I mostly use the paddle shifters.
Last Tank 305.7 Miles x 7.97 gal = 38.35 MPG!
Going to work up the 14 Fry. mostly in 4 gear at 70-75 mph. Angeles Crest coming home.
Happy so far...
Good Luck
