This Can't Be Right. Can it?
So here is one for the books. I filled my Honda Fit Sport Automatic up at a local BP on Sunday. As of a quarter tank of gas I was reading 173 miles on the tripometer. Now at 10.8 gallons a quarter tank is 2.7 gallons. 173 divied by that is 64 some odd miles to the gallon  That cant be right. It just cant. The only thing that I did differently at fill up was make sure that it was filled to the very tip top of the tank until it burped back on the pump and made it stop filling. It was regular 87 octane. Did that a few times. I havent been lead footed but I havent really babied the throttle either. Im not complaining, but I think Im going to try a few more fill ups and see if that happens again. Either way, Fits are the best thing on the road. I get happy everytime I see someone else driving one because I realize that they too are enlightened in the ways of superb driving fun and ultra practicality. Weigh in on this one folks, Im pleased yet highly baffled.

WOW 63! Awesome. That may be a FitFreak record.

That sound pretty good! It's kind of hard to tell EXACTLY where 3/4 and 1/4 tank is though, so just looking at it may not be that correct. When I fill mine up, it takes about 60 miles or so before the thingy even moves, and I'm sure you notice that with yours too. 60 miles on 2 ish gallans really makes a big difference! But fill it up and then let us know the real mileage. Sounds like it will be around 43ish!!

Sorry I meant to say after I had burned a 1/4 tank, not had a 1/4 tank. Forgot to proof read, but yeah, Im going to field some more after I fill up again.

The fuel gauge on the Fit is not linear. Posted many times in the past. You will get much different mileage based on your next fill-up.
|
I noticed that my fuel needle didn't move for the first 50 mile's when I installed my new axle-back(it happened twice with two different axle-back's).And it happened once when I went from using 93 to 89 gas.Our fuel gauge's just read all over the chart's. On average though 150/160 mile's half a tank(30 34 MPG).
|
200 Miles @ half-tank is roughly 40 MPG, from my observations from fill-ups, and recording tank mileage @ 1/2.
Once you fill up, let us know your fuel economy! :) |
Yeah, I did about that on my trip from Norfolk VA to Raleigh NC, avg spd about 70 ish. I was astonished. Fit = awesome sauce

You might want to try a search for "gas gauge" or something similar. I believe there have been a few about this.
Most gas gauges are not terribly accurate( linear or not it will change often) The one in the Fit happens to be the not so precise type. Some have reported very accurate readings and some not so much. It also seems to change with time as well, mine seems much more accurate now than it was when really new. The gauge also changes if you are not parked level or were driving on a hill or just on the freeway even. Freeway to streets seem to change the reading. It also seems to take a little while to straighten out so to speak after an abrupt change. Its far more accurate to check how many gallons you filled up with and go from there. 60+ mpg's in a USDM fit over a decent distance is not impressive its Insane!!! But more bizarre things have happened on this forum, from being too lean to a downhill tail wind...:D |
Not many gas gauges are linear. I would try driving that same distance and see if the needle is close to that spot. Of course, try to drive in the same manner with similar ambient conditions. If you notice that your needle is at that same position....I would top it to the level you indicated...that will give you a very high accuracy. :)

I just filled mine the other day after driving 250km (160 miles). I just fill up once a week...but it took 17 liters. I dont fill to the rim though...I usually put another 2 bucks in after the click....which is not even 2 liters.
That works out to 14.8km/liter...which is according to a MPG calculator: 34.8 US MPG or 41.8 Imp MPG. I have yet to go on a long highway trip with it. |

I have read in another thread here that the fill neck down to the actual tank is very long on the fit, so if you filled it to the very tip top till you could not any more then you probably have quite a bit more gas in the tank. So going down 1/4 of a tank on the gauge you probably are somewhere close to 4 gallons of gas used. But if my thinking is wrong and you are getting close to 60 mpg then you sir have an incredible Fit! |
