Should i take in for service???? MPG

ok so i know there is my post out there about this but everybody i talk to is getting better MPG than i, and i was wandering if something was wrong and should go in for service. so we got the fit about 3200 miles ago (exact mileage is 3256.7, it had 7 miles on it) no after market parts, completely stock, oh yeah 08 sport AT and we pretty much drive city driving picking kids up from school and back and forth to work and i feel like we are getting horrible gas mileage, so heres what i got what do you guys think for this driving?
(this starts with the 4th tank full)
247.1/26.47mpg
263.8/27.64mpg
247.4/25.9mpg
257.0/25.9mpg
265.2/26.4mpg
290.7/28.9mpg
261.7/24.7mpg
278.5/25.7mpg
241.5/24.1mpg
241.5/24.7mpg
267.6/28.2mpg

seems somewhat consistent but a have never seen 30mpg like some have said, also i run this thing as dry i a can, once even ran out of gas pushing the limit to get 30mpg.
so whatca think?

NaTuReB0Y 06-29-2008 07:30 PM

my avg. is around 30mpg.........plus or minus 1

my worst was around 24mpg..........

my best tank was 35.5mpg........i was not the driver

back on topic ---- you mentioned mostly city driving...there's the problem....

stop n' go driving = lower mpg
hwy driving = higher mpg

AtticusFit 06-29-2008 07:40 PM

yeah that what i thought, just here alot on guys on here, with city driving getting better than what im seeing.

ToFit2Quit 06-30-2008 12:01 AM

Sport Auto will do that to ya. :(

Are you still on break-in oil? cuz that stuff isn't that great. LOL. I'm getting about the same as you with 2000 miles on my car. It's possible that you're getting something like 32 mpg on freeway but 24 on city. Also, short trips eat up alot of gas because the oil needs to be hot for the car to get it's effeciency. I've noticed that the car seems a little stronger when it's been runing for 30 min opposed to being ran for 10 min. Also, note that break-in period can take up to 5,000 miles (first oil change?) so keep that in mind.

In my 5-speed Sport I get about 31-32 city beating on the car and driving liek a grandma about 37-39 city.

I can tell you one thing though, taking it in for service they are not going to do anything about it.

Rod2Rice 06-30-2008 12:21 AM

I'm a little over 2k on the clock and I have yet to see anything over 26.9mpg, so don't feel bad. I think I may have the worst mpg on here. Most of my driving sadly is traffic light to traffic light. As soon as the car gets up to say 50mph or so, I hit the next red light, it totally sucks. 15 mile commute takes me 45 minutes, its awful.

StreetUrchin 06-30-2008 01:14 AM

I'm getting around 32 MPG (My last tank was 32.5) Usualy no passenger or cargo, at most a toolkit and 1-2 passengers. My commute to work is about 7 miles @30-40mph with 1 RR crossing, 5 stop signs, and 5 stoplights takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes. I don't have to accelerate heavy (light amount of traffic), in this drive never break over 3500 rpm, often only 3000 rpm. Going out to lunch or running errands ends up being similar driving. Toss in a short commute or two that I go a few miles jump on the highway and zip to where I'm going within 10-15 miles.

I suppose that if I didn't have any highway miles it might drop down to 30 or so, will have to do a test sometime. I doubt taking it in will do anything for ya...most of it has to do with driving conditions and driver habits.

you solved your own problem. you drive an AT fit

BS. I drive an '08 AT Fit Sport in a very hilly (though not mountainous) area, and I just got 39.1 mpg on my last tank. If I get below 35, I did something wrong. I don't do anything extreme that could hurt the engine or transmission, like turning the car off or putting it in neutral while in motion. I also don't do anything that will put me or my passengers in danger, like drafting semis on the interstate or taking turns at excessive speed to keep my momentum up.

You just have to concentrate on driving while you're behind the wheel. Watch how other people around you drive, and then don't act like them. Don't let them pressure you into going faster than you need to. Don't think you have to accelerate as fast from a red light or stay on the gas at all times unless you're braking. Just remember that pretty much everyone in your vicinity is driving wastefully, so don't do what they're doing, and use the tips you read on this forum.

Oh, and I am still on my break-in oil. If it's true that your mileage gets better after an oil change, I can't wait to see what I'll be getting.

AtticusFit 06-30-2008 11:00 AM

well we just drive the car, we dont drive aggressive or racing around town just drive it normally. just dont understand why we get so crappy MPG, my daily driver is a 98 hatch with a mini-me swap, headers, intake, exhuast w/ test-pipe and i drive it hard and i consistently see 29 to 31 MPG and thats driving very aggressive on lighter driving seen higher MPGs

JustinM 06-30-2008 11:28 AM

Accelerate slowly, don't use the gas pedal when you're going down a hill, try to coast to stop signs and red lights instead of using the gas until you have to hit the brakes. There are other threads detailing those last couple suggestions in much more detail than I could.

AtticusFit 06-30-2008 01:33 PM

^^^^
yeah this is all good and everything, but i just want to drive and not have to do all these special driving technics just to save gas, i done have to in my hatch and get good mileage.

JustinM 06-30-2008 01:43 PM

Sorry, I don't know what to say. Your other car is probably lighter, better power:weight ratio, something. The EPA estimates 29 MPG city, though (and I've found the estimate to be low even before I started driving so conservatively), so it's likely that there's either something wrong or you're driving it a bit harder than you think you are.

martymcfly 06-30-2008 01:49 PM

Check your tire pressure.

myexpertise 07-11-2008 01:27 AM

hmm.. seems like a lot of factors really contribute to this matter,
well, trying to do some of their advices would surely help,

As for me, just what the other suggested, try it in hghways.. then you could definitely see a big difference from there..
