to AWD or not AWD?? that is the question!
we just got dumped on today and i'm loving it:) but only cause i have 4WD on my little 5door, i'm wondering if people would really want A 4WD FIT in north america? yeah you too canada! i'm not talking about an evo/sti killer, that would be expensive to do for honda and they'd never do it. but if honda turbo'd just one car (S2K,civic SI, rsxTYPES) they'd have ZERO competition, in their class! because HONDA builds THE BEST FOUR CYLINDER!! PERIOD
OK OFF MY SOAPBOX i'm talking about the realtime 4WD honda did back in the day, in the civic wagon 84 - 91 i own an 87 4WD wagon and it's T H E S H I T in the snow! it's completely incredible with the 1.5 engine too, not too much power to send me sideways as in the sti's i see going nowhere fast in my rearview mirror, my wagon is a rust bucket, but the interior in flawless and in as gooda shape as the 07 fit i own, very alike seating and roominess in the back too I seroiusly wanna see a raise of hands if you'd consider trading up to a 4wd/awd fit if it were available? i know they make them in japan and other countries, and if you have one tell me why you do or dont like it because i'd pay 3 -4 grand for this option, now i understand that some of you freakers in the US and Canada might have passed on it when you ordered your fit but now that you see the joy the fit brings you when driving it would you reconsider??? i'll start the list, please only put your name if it's a yes 1: vtecfit1 -- "hell yes AWD" 2:rvall004 -- "i will take it" 3:firebat666--"not full time" 4:kylerwho--"GD only" 5:keepitpg--that would be awesome" 6:squidmonkey--"not full time" 7:fitinmypocket--"not full time" 8:kamakurakid--" awd=sure" 9:cruzer85-- "realtime 4wd" 10:eldaino--"with bigger motor" 11:kenchan--"bigger motor too" but yes 12:dewthedew--"w/200hp motor" 13:maximuz-- "AWD=yes" 14: polaski--"AWD=for sure" 15:ein--"If as reliable as his 91 wagon" 16:dayak man--"i'd take the 4WD" 17:jtsimaras -- "bring it" 18: etc: |
I will take it :-)
|
absolutley! 4WD fit yes! mayb not full time, but sumthing like the CRV, that kicks in the rear wheels when the front slip.... id trade mine in, in a heartbeat!
|
just import a gd4 jazz or fit from japan. they are city awd which is an electronically controlled. it would be cheaper and easier than getting honda to build one. i would take one as long as its the gd style fit. i absolutely detest the ge chassis.
|
that would be awesome. even though the fit does well in utah snow already
|
I'd go for a 2wd/4wd set up, I don't need 4wd in summer.
back to the drink. :p |
I will consider getting one if they make it AWD (instead of 4WD) providing I can find a job soon (getting laid off in the current economy sucks).
If Suzuki can put AWD on their cheap SX4, Honda should be able to do it too. Not sure about the cheap part though :p |
I would be in for AWD, I know when I buy a car next year it will be AWD. Keeping the Fit, just need a second vehicle. Suzuki and Honda need to have lunch and iron out the details.
Who knows, Honda left F1...Suzuki left WRC....maybe I smell a new WRC car in the makings? |
AWD or 4WD eitherway they build it , it would be golden!
honda already builds it and offers it overseas, 27,000 members here (i know 90% don't get on here anymore) and noone has one ? honda needs to offer it as special order, i waited almost 6 mo. when i ordered my fit after i ordered it, it took a week to build from the build date and then three weeks to get to my dealership once the vin# was spit out at the end of the production line, so i say if i'm willing to wait i'd be willing to wait for a special order AWD fit and more than willing to pay extra! i'm with tyler though , i like the GD better than the GE so i don't see a GD AWD in anyones future but the new style is really growing on me, and if honda offered a GE AWD i'd jump ship |
Our 1997 CRV has 4wd real time-kicks in when your tires need it. If that was available when I purchased my Fit Sport....I would have purchased that option.
|
But you have to remember, there will be a gas mileage drop when adding all of that rotating mass.

I have the best of both worlds, a Fit and a Subaru. Now that is one company that knows how to built a good AWD system. Probably the best in the world. |

[quote=BlueBlazer49;524712]That's right. More gas consumption and a higher sticker price. And eventually, higher repair costs.
so you wouldn't have bought an awd fit? i'd be willing to bet you would have if it were an option! but i could be wrong. and about repair costs? hmmm well i suppose if this 87 4WD wagon i have is still on the road after 22 years and is incredible in snow and muddy roads and i think the diff 89w90 oil has been changed religously (previous owner) i think i'd be willing to split with 10 bucks every two years for some 08200-9007 dual pump diff fluid that the newer system uses!!! |
the sx4 may have awd, but it is SLOW AS HELL. and that is not something that needs to be made even more of an issue than it already is on the fit.
the idea is nice, but unless honda is planning on slapping a bigger engine in there to compensate, i'll be fine without the awd. most fwd vehicles to great in the snow anyway, at least with a proper set of tires. if i were ever to invest in awd, it would be for added comfort and stability in snow, and performance. (i think that its been proven that awd actually only increases traction by like 22% or something like that in bad weather? i dunno. its still fun though.) |
i wouldn't mind awd, but not on the FitS unless it came with a 200hp engine
and a 6MT. |
No need for AWD or 4WD for me. I don't need the weight or the mechanical complexity.
DC area doesn't get much deep snow. If it's too deep for FWD, then I'm staying in. I can walk to shopping and entertainment. I can also walk to a bus stop to take the metro to work in a pinch. RG |
if the fit was 200hp yes.
|
I like the current FWD layout. the Fit is light weight and is nimble around the corners. adding weight and AWD understeer would effect this too much.
Don't get me wrong, AWD is great, I miss my '01 2.5RS. I may even get one again as a project car. But I don't think it belongs on a Fit as a performance aspect. If you want AWD strictly for mud/off-road/rain conditions, not for speedy-performance, I think it would be fine on a Fit. |
what about the GD4 fit in japan? why doesnt anyne just import one?
