FYI: Emergency Brake, 3 clicks not enough!

Well, I had an interesting Friday. I came home to make a sandwich for lunch and parked my Honda on a small grade (like I have done HUNDREDS of times before). I pulled the e-brake and set the car in gear like usual. I walked inside, made a sandwich, and prepared for my afternoon computer service calls. When I came out I noticed my car was missing and a trail leaving from the garage towards a hill in front of my house. Check out the carnage...

OH CRAP!! At least you have insurance and weren't around/in the car :/

I always thought it was weird that the e-brake only went up a few clicks. I'm used to older honda's where the e-brake comes up a good 6inches or so LOL

Oh that made my stomach hurt seeing the trail over the hill and no Fit! Ouch! At least no one was injured and I guess it could have been worst. I am sure it made for a not so good day - especially knowing that your e-brake failed. I would definitely talk to Honda about this and have it checked out to make sure that it did not have a failure that resulted in this damage. Keep us informed on how it goes.

Cat :x

Woah dude. Brutal.

Not to laugh at your expense, but when I read the title and the opening paragraph, I was like

Then I saw the trail and I was like it ran away!

Damn good thing that tree was there.

And yes, thank god for insurance!

You mean putting the car in gear is not enough? I thought the friction of the priston is good enough to stop your car from rolling......

unless your definition of small grade is a steep hill.....

What the hell man! I cant believe the e-brake AND leaving the car in gear wasnt enough. Unless you parked on a freaking mountain. Very sad indeed

The hill is not very big at all. But I'm now going all Hulk on my e-brake from here on out.

It's interesting how funny things can be when you have insurance. I'm just glad this happened before I started doing my body mods

It just sucks to have a double failure. Car slips out of gear AND I didn't have the e-brake pulled enough. Crazy!

That sucks. I'm sending these pictures to my wife, she puts the car in gear, but never pulls the e-brake hard enough when she parks my Fit. Maybe this will scare her into doing it my way.

I can't believe that that car would roll off like that if it were left in gear. On the other hand, it was a good thing that tree was there to stop it, or you might never have found it again. Ouch!

Holy crud...

I didn't think it even had pressure at 3 clicks. I always have just yanked on it.

I agree with Sheila, the old civic's ebrake pulled up something like 20-30 clicks! Of course that cable was stretched just a touch.

Just out of curiosity, what gear was it in? In mine it usually won't roll in 1st but if it's in 2nd or reverse all bets are off. I know the engine has too darn little friction in it, the thing spins for over 2 seconds after shutting off the ignition from warm idle.

First gear. Parked on a small slope.

I guess I'd better not plan on this car holding on a grade in gear, then. I'll consider myself warned.

whoa, was your car still in gear when you got to it?

I'm wondering if maybe it wasn't completely in the gate because i've parked my car on my girlfriend's driveway which is VERY steep, like 50 degrees and you need like 8 clicks to stop the car. but i've experimented by putting the car in first and putting the e-brake all the way down, and the car stays put.
