What's wrong with my breaks?
Today I was going home, it was raining and wet. I stepped on my break and I have no breaks. The engine died too. I restarted the car and the I have breaks again but the thing is when I step on the break hard, there will be a weird sound like something is breaking or sound like the break pads are not gripping right. I have 45000 miles on my 08 Fit now and did all the service myself like oil changes, do you guys think its my break pad? Also, I noticed this before even when I first had the Fit. Sometimes when I break or slow down there will be a weird sound like a motorcycle slowing down "brrrr brrrrrrrrrrrrr''. I did not pay attention to too much because I did not think it will be a big problem. But now it seems to be a big problem to me, I notice that this happen more if the road is wet and when there is snow. Please advise. Thanks.

@ 45,000 miles, I would expect brake shoes and pads to be worn. You might want to check that.
Do note that the ABS system makes a grinding noise when it's working. You'd notice that under hard braking, especially with rain or snow. Check the pads and shoes first, though. Something else to think about: If memory serves, the 30,000 mile service includes flushing the entire system's brake fluid, as well as a check of the pads/shoes/rotors/drums. |
Thanks E = Mc2 I will replace the pad for now, I have to use the car to go to work tomorrow and the only place I can get the pad maybe at Walmart. Thank again.

Check the pads and shoes first before you go spend your $$$, but I would bet that is the problem. Which brings the question, having never owned a Honda before: What is the average life expectancy of the wear items in a Honda Fit's brakes? Any of the Honda techs on here want to chime in? |
If your brakes break every time you brake, that's be a tough break, and you'll need new brakes that don't break so your car brakes.

Ok now I have no problems with stopping but sometimes when stepping slowly down on the brake or only braking a little I feel a vibration in the petal and a buzzing sound as explained above.
I am fairly car savvy and I figured this problem was the ABS brakes kicking in. I think the ABS brakes are kicking in because of my warped rotors I can feel them pulse when I stop so I know there warped maybe the fact that the break does'nt apply pressure rite away so the ABS system thinks it needs to kick in. I have new rotors and pads sitting in my garage and depending on the weather tomorrow I will be putting them on hopefully this resolves the issue. If not it's going to the dealer but you know since the problem doesn't always occur that the honda tech's wont be able to find a problem. |
Hahaha yeah BRAKES, I'm sorry I was in a rush and forgot to re-check my post. Anyways the brakes seems to be working fine today. I will get my BREAKS checked tomorrow, so I won't brake my car. :D oops backwards. :wavey::rotfl:

Well I bought the ceramic brake pads which is Dura Brand from Auto Zone. The old pads are is still good but it is not ceramic. I replaced it anyways, I will give an update once the car is fully tested especially when its raining. |
i love my breaks. it eases my mind from work.
as for your brakes, they were on manual control as to vaccum assist. when your car shut off, dunno how, it cut the power to the vaccum to the brake booster. |
ive noticed at work whenever i change out the pads on a car, the inside pad usually wears out faster than the outside ones.
the shoes on the rears are hardly used as much as the fronts, and can easily have over 100k miles on them and still be in good functional condition. depending on how hard and the conditions that the car is driven in, would def. vary in the life expectancy of the brakes. (obviously) For the most part ive noticed that the pads last around 50k miles under normal driving before having to replace them. I'd def. have new pads put on and have the rotors machined. |

I'm beginning to think that I lost brakes due to my engine shut off. But I remember looking at the time and I cannot see any signs that it is off. I just turned the key off and turned it back on. |
Well here's an update... After running the car to work, the car seems to brake well but one thing is that the car ran rough. Lots of noise from the front wheels or tires maybe and maybe noise from the new pads rubbing like hell. Anybody know what I should do? Thanks in advance.

Did you tighten the lug nuts all the way!? :hyper: After you do work on the car and it's make new noises and feels weird it's not safe to drive until fixed. Maybe you bought the wrong sized pads? They should not be rubbing. Maybe your rotors are warped to an extent that the new pads are touching parts of the rotor at certain points causing a vibration as if you were pumping the brakes? |

Are the pads rubbing 100% of the time or only at certain areas of the wheel spining?

Tonight I reset the pad and used the nuts that came with the pads, the noise is lessened but its still there. I am kind of thinking that the noise are from my tires because before I switch the tires front and back, the noise was coming from behind. Now I that I switch 'em the noise are up front. I will try to switch them again and see if that will resolve the problem.
