GD3's: Which oil helps with mpg?
Synthetic or Regular Oil?
I'm thinking of switching to synthetic oil but I'm not sure about the benefits of it. |
Hmm I don't think it'd matter. Just keep your viscosity low, no more than 20-weight. Could be wrong though.

Thanks guys, I have not decided yet if I will switch to synthetic. For now I will be staying with regular oil.

I would like to run a comparison test to see once i need to change my oil to see if Synthetic oils get any better mpg rating. I know there are many variables out there to this

As i've heard, there's no real difference. Like it's not significant.. maybe like 1mpg, maybe 2mpg more as long as they're no leaks and the engine parts are being lubricated well its all the same it seems. For newer engines anyways, I haven't heard much about high mileage engines like over 150K.

I not sure on this one.. I've been running it on synthetic since the first oil change. The most important factor in MPG is driving style.
20-weight is good. I would probably go with 30-weight if i lived in the desert and 0-weight if i lived some where very cold all year. With my GD I average 35-40 MPG when the weather is nice. I get lower mileage in the winter. I've also gotten my car above 45 mpg by hypermiling. I'm using synthetic mostly because I just want the engine to be as lubricated as possible especially during the winter for cold startups. I plan on keeping the Fit for many miles. |
^^ yea I can see how synthetic would out perform conventional in colder areas but seeing as how I live in southern california, it wouldn't matter too much as long as the engine parts are staying lubricated well. I read somewhere in another thread where the FIT was designed to run on Dino oil, but making the switch after the engine is fully broken in is suggested by a lot of tech members. After 15-20K miles. Plus, people have reported seeing less leakage on conventional vs synthetic, with synthetic.

Considering the long oil change interval, I plan on sticking with synthetic, most likely Mobil 1, 0w20 when I can find it.
