I'm starting to think gas brand matters

I make an excel sheet for all my mileages. i mainly use chevron, getting 32-34 mpg. When i tried ARCO (bp) i got my lowest 30. That's w/ slow driving, wheras aggressive driving w/ chevron gets me 33. Then i tried olymmpian, and got 32. I was discussing, and my firend siad 76 gets high mileage.

A while ago i said it's hard to tel if brand matters, but the numbers I collect are drastic (to me) enough to see something's up.

You get what you pay for. Gas brand DOES matter because each company mixes different amount of additives into it. Arco use to dilute their gas formula with small amounts of water. That's why Arco is always the cheapest gas. I never touch that stuff.

I am personally a big fan of 76 and Chevron. My friend, who uses Chevron saids that their claim for cleaning out grime in the engine is true. He recently took apart his engine and it's spotless.

Are u exaggering w/ arco and water? water wll destroy your engine.

also, i didn't notice arco was cheaper. I just assumed the gas price dropped or something. iono what this BS when i was a kid taught to me was: "all gas is the same since they buy from the same source"

No I am not exaggerating about Arco and water. It's a very small, miniscue percent of water. It's just to dilute the gasoline enough to run the cars. At least this is how they have done it in the past. I can't account for their gas after being bought by BP. Yes, it will eventually destroy your engine. Their gas has also been known to cause MAJOR carbon build up.

Arco has always been the cheaper alternative. It's always at least $0.03 cheaper than their competitors. Gas does come from the same source. But like I mentioned earlier, the ADDITIVES that they mix into the gas before they pump it into the gas stations are what sets them apart.

edit: you don't have to take my word for it. feel free to google it or surf other forums for more information.

the only one of these brands I recognize and is sold in my area is Chevron, and there arent any chevron stations close by.

fit_4_a_king Jun 15, 2006 07:07 AM

I thought ARCO was less expensive because it came from Alaska instead of the Middle East (less transportation costs), at least thats what my friend who is an officer on an ARCO tanker told me.

Anyways, the Owners Manual mentions to use Top Tier gasonline, which is what I use- either Unocal or Shell.

I usually use Shell but notice I get not so good MPG. The best so far I have tested is Mobil, 76 and Chevron.

nerdgrl416 Jun 15, 2006 11:15 AM

Does it matter if I use premium?

Well if you use premium, you are throwing money down the drain. The Fit engine only requires 87, so thats what you should put in.

If you are concerned about beneficial additives like Techron from Chevron or V-Power from Shell, keep in mind that all grades of Chevron gasoline come with Techron whereas only the premium grade of Shell gasoline comes with V-Power.

I use Chevron and Mobil and get the best mileage with Mobil.

Ya I started a thread on 5/11/06 asking for what gas brand and mileage everyone was getting, instead of getting easy answers I just got a bunch of loud mouth bull from guys saying how unscientific it would be. It is beyond belief how some folks would rather show how smart they think they are than wright an easy response. It would still be great info and easy to trend.

I've been using arco only cuz i've been so broke! I try to use Shell or Chevron whenever I can. Gas prices should be coming down now that Al-Zarqawi has been taken down.

Fit4Ryan Jun 15, 2006 07:50 PM

my friend did a study for school involving testing gas from different companies, and the short of came down to how the gasoline is bonded together. i dont know the exact terms and such but they found that arco would combust faster than chevron making the few penny cost difference well worth the chevron gas.
I wish i paid more attention to him to better explain but it does fall in line with the explantion of why your milage varies.

btw,he did the study while at Washington State University

LMFAO

Please tell me you are not serious.

MirrorWorks Jun 15, 2006 08:09 PM

I have a friend who works for Chevron and she tells me that the difference in gas is usually the additives, like bitter was saying. Arco uses either crappy or no additives, and other brands do use some, and in the long term, it usually pays off for your engine.

Chevron is the only gas I would put in my car!

Check out this site: http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

Chevron was the first to be a top tier gasoline. Techron is patented!

I've been using Chevron since Techroline (1980)!

A co-woker came from the petroleum business. He said in the 1970s they loved regular gasoline. If you had 5k gallons of bad xylene, acetone, MEK, whatever that you had to get rid of fast, blend it with a couple batches of gasoline and your problem was gone.

Shell, supporting Mother Netherlands......

Thanks for posting this! We don't have Chevron in St. Louis, but we have plenty of Quiktrips and Phillips - and I generally only fill up at one of the two. I always swore my car didn't like anything else, and now I know why!

I think I was one of those (99% certain I was teh first response of that thread ha). That's why my thread title is "i'm starting to think", as in my ideologies are changing.
