Road Trips
 

I recently finished a (if I can call it this) huge road trip. I drove 5300 miles over the course of 2.5 weeks and went to two music festivals and 2 nights of Widespread Panic at Red Rocks in Colorado. I managed to get back home with just enough time to sleep for about 3 hours before teaching my summer math class at 10am. The festivals I went to were Wakarusa in Lawrence, Kansas and Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennesee. I was travelling alone in th car but my friend, The Ice Cream Man (visit http://icecreamman.com), was driving his ice cream truck in front of me a lot of the time.


I got excellent gas wileage when I followed the Ice Cream Truck, whose name is Bessie. I would get 40-41 mpg with the AC on going about 55-60 mph. When I drove alone going 75-80 mph my mileage went down to about 33-34 mpg with AC on.

These are probably not shocking numbers, but I wanted to share and if people are interested I can post an entire trip average on gas mileage.

Also if you have done any road trips please share about them here. For me I took many pictures at the concerts. Oh yeah I forgot to mention we had backstage access for all the shows. We give away ice cream backstage and therefore get the access. It is a sweet gig. check the link above for pics from our journey.

Man that is an awesome story! Some of the stories and pictures on the site are pretty cool. Not to mention the good gas mileage you got.

yeah thats awesome gas mileage you got.. I only was getting like 36-38.. but we went 80 all the way back from NM. You should have had the passenger sit in refresh mode while passing cars you get alot of heads that turn!

Gas milage
 

With my Accord Coupe V6 I get 21-23 around town w a/c & w/o a/c respectively. On the open highway @ 70 to 85 mph I get around 32 with or w/o a/c. The FIT (so far 2300 mi) would get the same type of milage IF Honda actually put in a larger engine... say 1.8L. But that would have meant that they would have to spend all of that money re-designing the 1.8 wouldn't it? The 1.5 L series could use a lot more torque especially for going up those mountains?! :cool: But, all in all, here in Atlanta, I am satisfied with my new Blue FIT and am waiting for a few simple mods.
I think that those that say that you lose mpg if you go over 55 don't have a Honda! (and they also believe in Global Warming!) :D

Did you mean :rolleyes:, mis-speak, or think people with Hondas need the remedial physics course:p

My Road Trip
 

I drove from NJ to Key West, Fl. and all around also about 5k of driving in the process of 5 days. I have a blue MT Sport. I had about 75 lbs luggage and I weight about 350 lbs (6'5"). Anyway I had my wife with me the whole time. My MPG was ~34 consistently with the A/C on as it was like 95 degrees or hotter. One night, I drove almost ~ 105mph the whole time, constantly downshifting into 4th and beating the heck out of it just to see what the WORSE gas mileage could be. It went down to 29mpg. (not bad) although it was all highway.
I average ~36 by myself and a best of 41.

Either way, had a blast and a caught a lot of people looking at my car. I have a pic of it parked in between palm trees somewhere in Key West.
Just my input. I have over 14k on it already (purchased in late June) and have always had sport and muscle cars until this purchase. I just wanted a cheap car and looked at reports on C&D. I ended up falling in love with this little car and am definitely a Honda Owner for life.

Hey freaks! How about we start a road trip stories thread with pics.

14K on my car, just had oil changed 2nd time. Dealer wanted $ 249, but local garage did it for $ 24.95. Gone to Minneapolis 3X from NJ (4X by this Oct., makes me feel like an 18-wheeler driver). I can get 40 mpg at 60 mph on Interstate. If I go 65-70, and use paddles, mpg drops to as low as 30. Now looking at new CR-V as new 2nd car, pix and spec's now up on Honda site.

Then, maybe if I were to go 55 mph I would get better than 32 w/a/c??
right now: 85, level, ac: 32 to 33 mpg highway??

For an oil change???? Are you kidding??

I'd say $249 was mis-typed, probably meant $49.

$ 249 is right. They said that was for inspecting everything, and rotating the wheels, etc., all of which they already did on the 1st oil change at N/C (as part of the purchase price)- Honda of Princeton, NJ. vs. $ 24.95 at Ivan's, Edison, NJ.

Did a road trip this weekend from Portland to Sunriver. We drove up and down the mountain passes to get there, plus about about two hours highway and city driving each way. Oh yeah, and like 15 miles of washboarded gravel roads going 20mph :) LOL.

There were four passengers (around 600 pounds), plus around 50 to 100 pounds of luggage and food. The AC was going the whole time as well, and we kept the Fit at around 60mph through the mountains and on the highway. Our mileage there was 33mpg, and that included some around-town driving. Our mileage coming home was 40mpg!! Yahoo! Our Fit has 2100 miles on her now.

ok this was 2 week ago... i've been busy with my senior project work...

traffic is "crazy" as usual in the bayarea to down south in the evening around 3pm. we took 101 straight all the way to reach Santa Ana. I haven't been there so I don't know my direction....

i got about 36-38 mpg or so because i have to change my speed at some point to 65-80 mph range. the ac was turned off most of the time... only use it when its really really hot because most of the time we are going uphill.

my dad called me when i just past santa maria.... he said it would be so much quicker if we took I-5 and at where we are at. my wife and I was like ahh........? i guess.... so we check our map and took the 41 route to get to I-5.

MAN!! the 41 route is a "scary curvy" road. I liked it because i can see how good the fit handle in this situation, but some turns was sharp and mysterious in other ways... not know if your droping down, climing up or making another sharp turn again....

it took us about 1 hour just to cross 41 and get to I-5 i didn't drive too fast because i'm not fimiliar with the direction.

up hill climbing seems to be best at or above 4k RPM and it seems easy too! :D


anyways, we were exhausted from the drive, but we all had a great time at disneyland, my cousin worked there, so we got in free and got free meals and discount here and there what a vacation!

Expensive oil change
 

That for an 'oil change'? Might as well own a BEEMER, Mercedes, Cadillac, Lexus etc! Oops! Sorry, I guess their oil change & 'inspection' would be 3 times that! That IS a bit steep though... Oh yeah: New Jersey... hmmmm
You could always go to Precision Tune (lol) ... around here in the Atlanta area, the on down the street lets me watch! Only way they will touch my Hondas! And they will even let you bring your own parts and just charge labour...
