Years ago, my stepson told me he wanted to buy a boat. I gave him some step-fatherly advise - "You just don't buy a boat, you gotta buy a hitch, a trailer, safety jackets, insurance, blah, blah, and blah." Disappointed, he looked at me and said, "Thanks for spoiling my dream."

Since then he has told me he always says, "You just don't buy a ____" if someone tells him they want to buy ___ and thinks of me.

The other day I called him up and told him, "I just don't buy a Honda Fit, I gotta (or wanna) buy window tint, a cargo tray, a detail polisher, a sunshade, blah, blah and blah." We both laughed. By the way, he never did buy a boat.
