Walked out and didn't buy - opinions
 

Hi folks,

So today I viewed a Honda fit, 2013 base that was listed at $12,954. It had 35,375 miles on the clock.

It seemed like a good enough deal. Didn't win me on the drive (struggled a bit up a hill) and I noticed two very noticeable and one less so chips in the windshield that had been filled. I offered 12.2 and said the savings would go towards immediately replacing the windshield and they just would not budge on the price. He said all he'd do is $75 for the documentation fee. I walked out, very upset and a little angry because it's a base model with a pretty banged up windshield.

I am just wondering if I made the right choice. A lot of the Fit SPORTS around here are 11-12k for a 2010 with 60k+ miles on and this was a 2013 BASE with 35k, so a lesser newer model for the same price (but damaged windshield). I just wonder if I walked away from a good deal and should have absorbed the cost of a new windshield - or steering clear and standing firm on my ground was good. $14.2k out the door and then needing to pay $200 for a windshield kinda seemed lame to me.

What is the fixation on the windshield? If it is not cracked, why would you bother replacing it? A few repaired chips are certainly no reason to replace the windshield.

Personally, I feel you made the right choice. I may be a bit biased, but I think that the Sport provides more of what you seem to be looking for; I would take a higher model/older car for the same money over the newer base model, if the conditions were right. When spending that kind of $$$ on a purchase, I'd like for it to be in as good a condition as possible, and if the windshield condition bothered you, it would continue to be a source of irritation, had you bought the car. A better deal can ALWAYS be found, IF you have the patience to seek it. Just my $0.02 worth. Good luck to you!! :)

I paid 15k for one with 9 miles on it (two of those were my test drive). Don't just walk away from that price, laugh at it.

That's a gear choice problem. Not the car's fault.

Don't be upset. They think they can get 13k for a two year old used economy car with a lot (for the age) of miles on it, and sadly, they're probably right. Be happy that they're not getting that much for it from you. You made the right choice.

I agree with the "buy a Sport" advice. And I suggest you buy from a (desperate) private seller. Personally, I wouldn't worry about a chipped and repaired windshield. It shows the owner took care of the car by have the chips repaired - probably the same for the rest of the car.
