R.I.P. to my GD

My fit had less than 40k miles on it but this is what happens when someone eats a red light and smashes into a fit. I walked away with nothing broken just a concussion, chest, hand, back and neck pain. Can't say the same for the fit though it was declared a total loss. Now have to go about finding a new fit and really not enjoying myself in the process, car shopping so damn stressful. For the most part used fits are way over priced imo. Hope to purchase one by the end of the week not having a car sucks.

Wow! That looks like a hard hit. Glad you are alive. Get better with those pains.

The best result from the thread is your health. Glad to hear no major injuries. However, keep on top of that concussion. Some after-effects come weeks/months later.
GD's mileage was excellent with that rare color!!! After owning a GD for seven years, IMO, the GE's are definitely an upgrade. Drove my brother-in-law's '11 (back in the islands) and loved it.
Some nice low-mileage GE's out there. Wishing you the best of luck on landing another Fit sooner than later. Post pics once that happens. :D

Thanks everyone!

Looking at a used GE right now but the only problem is, imo they pretty much all over priced. Since I don't have any down payment for a car I have to get something with a little more miles than I would like. Found a 2011 with 55k miles and they are asking $9,600, its the only one I could find in my price range without having over 100k miles. Might go and pull the trigger this weekend! :ohnoes:

If you could wait till Sept. my nephew's (located in Boston,MA) lease on his '13 GE sport Manual is up and he's gonna lease another new Fit.
Color is polished steel with less than 30k (right now at 23k). Residual is around $13,000 (could be above your budget).
Car you found sounds good but you may want to go onto car sites (cars.com) and see what else is available near your area. Good luck!!!

Thanks for the heads up but I can't go without a car till Sept. I been searching , cars.com, autotrader and carguru and that's the best deal around unless I bump up my budget. Really trying to keep my payments around 140 a month. I'm going to go to the dealer and offer 8,500 , I know its a low ball offer put im hoping we could meet at 9k . lol

Yeah glad your ok. Good luck with the hunt for a replacement.

bargainguy 03-26-2016 02:22 AM

Glad to hear you're OK.

I was in pretty much the same boat you were in a couple months ago. Red light runner hits my front driver side quarter panel. Three airbags deployed, car is a total loss.

So I go out and start looking at GEs as a replacement. The dilemma - and this was just before the Takata air bag recall was expanded to GEs - is that low mileage GEs hold their value really well. I test drove at least a dozen GEs, and most were priced above blue book, at least for my area.

My favorite example of this was a Mitsu dealer who had a '13 Sport w/55K, asking price $13,9xx. Nice but not $14K nice. I come back from the test drive, tell the salesperson that I'm a serious buyer, but blue book on that '13 was right around $11K, and if I'm paying $14K for a used car with no warranty, I could just get into a new '16 LX for a couple grand more and at least have the manufacturer's warranty for a few years.

I tell the salesperson I'm more in the $11-12K range. He toddles off to talk it over with the sales manager, comes back and says something to the effect of "We just can't help you." Didn't even bother coming up with a counteroffer. That Sport had been sitting on that lot for quite a few months. I asked him, you do want to sell it, don't you? No response to that one. You just know when someone doesn't want your business for whatever reason. Hey, no problem. Plenty of dealers out there who don't push good business away.

So in the end, I wound up with a '16 LX. I did exactly what I told the Mitsu dealer I was going to do.

I was really resisting buying a new car at first, and all the GEs were nice, but in the end, the combination of no remaining warranty plus high resale prices killed any chance of getting a low mileage GE for relatively cheap. The only ones I did find that were significantly under blue book were rebuilders, and all of them had various issues, so I'm glad I stayed away.

Wow, I had the same experience as you. Would have loved to go used but everything was so over priced and my area only had 8 used Fits in a sports trim for sale and all of them with low miles are priced at around 15k. The best deal I could find was a '13 with 33k miles but had so much rust from being at a dealer by the beach. So last night I ended up purchasing a '16 EX I would have been happy with the LX also but went EX because i said YOLO. lol
