How often do you do your regular maintenance?
How often do you guys regularly do your maintenance?
So I'm about to change my serpentine belt, because my 1 year old battery isn't being charged properly. Which made me realize I haven't really done any major maintenance to the car since I got it two years ago. I got my Fit at about 65,000 miles, now I'm at 95,000. https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...999O00132A.pdf According to this, I'm due for a lot of maintenance. I have the vehicle maintenance history from the previous owner hiding somewhere in a clusterfuck of papers, so I'm going to assume nothing has been done and just start over anew. The maintenance schedule form says that I need to inspect valve clearance once at 30k miles. I'm going to do it now, just to make sure, but do I ever have to do it again in the future? Or is it set it and forget it? It says I should inspect the timing chain at 105k miles, which I'm close enough to IMO. How do I do that myself? Or do I have to go to the dreaded mechanic/dealership? Should I replace the ignition coils with the spark plugs? |
Valve clearance should be inspected/possibly adjusted at every 30k-40k
I personally would do the following with your mileage -Transmission fluid flush -Coolant change -Serpentine belt change -Spark plugs -Brake fluid change -Battery load test |
Does Honda really recommend replacing the timing chain? Isn't the whole point that other than replacing a tensioner they should last a long time?
TFW my 2000 S2000 has the original timing chain & I take it up to 9000 RPM with no fear. |

Having a timing chain instead of a belt was one thing that swayed me into buying my high-mile Fit.
My Prelude has 105k miles with the original timing belt. Been putting off the replacement...not sure if I want to tackle it or bring it in. |
You're "putting off" replacing a rubber wear part on a 20 year old car with more than 100k miles? That's like putting off disarming a bomb.

If that timing chain is not making any noise, it's probably fine.
Why are you replacing a serpentine belt to improve charging? Is the belt slipping? I'm unnerved by this talk of inspecting valve clearances. I'm at 30K miles and haven't even thought to do it yet. Is this something you can do with a feeler gauge at home by removing the cover? |

Well according to the OP the maintenance guide is actually calling for a Timing Chain inspection at 105K.
It's not actually saying replace it. I had a friend who's timing "belt"...not chain,- failed. And it pretty much destroyed the engine. So if I had a high mileage vehicle with a timing belt? I'd definitely be pro-active about replacement. |
The maintenance guide posted by the OP is not for a Fit. You can tell because of the referenced timing belt.
That same document turns up on CR-V, Accord, Civic, etc forums, but no one seems to know which model Honda it is for. It was definitely for a Honda made before the advent of the maintenance minder system. |
i just follow the standard schedule when the car shows its time to do the oil change, etc.
i dont remember which service the GK is going to be at next.. coming up 3yrs near 30k miles or something. dont know |
