2001 Accord - left rear caliper sticking
 

I have a 2001 Accord LX-V6 with 78k miles on it. This past week I
noticed hot brake smell after my 10 mile drive to work and I noticed
that the left rear lug nuts were considerably hotter than the ones on
the right side. A trip to the dealer revealed that the left rear
caliper had a sticky pin that was not allowing the caliper to release,
so the pads were dragging on the rotor.

Is this a common problem with this car?

I've had all brake work done at this same dealer, which includes one
prior change on the rears at about 42k miles . . .

I've got a 99 accord EX and have had problems with the rear calipers
"sticking" . The rear brakes were dragging badly and when I changed the rear pads, I had to beat the brake pads out of the retainers with a hammer ( not kidding ). Also note - regularly serviced by Dealer ; not any more !

I found the problem - it seems that the retainer may have been designed with too tight a tolerance for the pads. The problem is that corrosion builds up under the stainless steal clip that sits in the retainer. This causes the pads to bind and not release when the brake pressure is off. I was amased that just a thin layer lock the brake pads in place. Very simple fix: when you do the brakes, pop out the two stainless clips from the retainer braket ( where the tabs on the outside edge of the pad sit ) and clean the channels down to bare metal. I used my trusty Dremmel. Next put a layer of moly in the channel, reinstall the two clips and reassemble the brakes. Haven't had a repeat of the problem.
