2014 Jeep Cherokee officially unveiled Bigger, Bolder, Uglier

Jeep is doing some late night damage control as they have released official images of the 2014 Cherokeehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png well ahead of its debut at the New York Auto Show.

In a move designed to convince us it's not as ugly as we think, the press photos attempt to portray the model in the best light possible. That's no easy task, but the pictures show a higher-end variant that has more body-color trim than the models posted by Jalopnik earlier today. This, combined with lack of the shock factor, helps to make the model seem slightly less hideous.

While the Cherokee's design is sure be controversial, we can see the crossover will have a curved grille, slender headlights and a uniquely shaped hood. There's also plastic body cladding, chrome trim and a swoopy shoulder line.

Jeephttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png declined to release powertrain specifications, but speculation suggests we can expect a 2.4-liter TigerShark four-cylinder and a 3.2-liter V6. There could also be a 2.0- and possibly 3.0-liter diesel for Europe. Regardless of the final offerings, Jeep says the model will have "best-in-class capability, exemplary on-road driving dynamics and fuel economy improvements of more than 45 percent versus the outgoing mid-size SUV model (aka Liberty)."

The 2014 Jeep Cherokeehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png will be built at the company's plant in Toledo, Ohio and sales are slated to begin in the third quarter of 2013.

Appropriate title for this post. Clearly they dropped an Italian in on top of the design department and he was like, "I know exactly how to style an American, how do you say, sports-utility - the Fiat Multiplia is a good starting point!"

really reminds me of an amphibious vehicle. i hope it floats.

"This is why the other countries are beating us"

Get real.

America is putting out THE BEST cars on the market right now.

Looking for a small hatchback? Fiesta ST.
Midsize hatchback? Focus ST.
Family sedan? SS.
Affordable sports car? Mustang GT.
Truck? Always been American.
SUV? Same.

First two were originally styled for the European market. All have low resale value and only average reliability. American manufactures are trying harder but I don't think they are there yet.

Interesting most of the cars and SUVs were new generations except the Corolla which will be new in 2013.

If you knew anything, you'd know Ford has been working to make its car lineup 'global,' so no they weren't designed for the Euro-market first, the current generations are designed with EVERYWHERE in mind. They also DESTROY any Japanese cars in fun to drive and fit and finish.

At this point the ONLY thing Hondas/Toyotas have going for them is their reputation.

cjecpa 02-25-2013 11:47 AM

I wish Ford would stay with their global approach and offer the Focus ST station wagon in the USA.

mike410b 02-25-2013 12:43 PM

No one would buy it. Americans hate wagons.

People would say, oh I'd buy that, but never follow through on it.
