Test Drive : New 2018 Hyundai Accent SE w/6 speed auto

The car rode and handled well with very little cabin noise from outside . The interior seems tight with no rattles at that time . Top speed was 60 with 60% (Hwy.) / 40% ( City ) and 2 people . The display was 15 miles and around 24 M.P.G. overall at start of the drive . Drove 24 miles and managed 44.3 m.p.g. with the 6 speed transmission automatic that shifts smooth . Did use A/C when at red lights ( possibly 4) . The ACCENT is a Linen Beige ( light brown ) SE at $17,155 ( w/ Destination ) before Rebate and dealer discount . Considering it .

I'm sure it would be reliable, but I can't imagine anything more boring than a slow, underpowered beige Korean sedan with an automatic.

If I bought that, my next "vehicle" would be a pine box.

Those Hyundai's are getting better and better. Someday even I may look into it. And with a longer warranty to boot.

Bought it . Here's the gas mileage at 70 miles after dealer fill . Started at 41 total miles . Accidentally reset the Overall Gas Mileage of 46 at an average of 38 M.P.H. with 2 people . Will average out the overall gas mileage of the 2 at fill . Hope that works . Can't upload pics .

Congratulations....

What I like?
That ultra small Shark Fin antennae.

I really have never liked the Radio Controlled Car look of the antennae that came with my Honda Fit, but I have been too lazy to buy something else and install.

Why the automagic?!? Whhhhyyyyy?!?!?? lol

in other news, The jalopnik review looks good. Congrats!

It's hard to buy a bad car these days. Even the real cheapo ones are surprisingly nice. If not necessarily fun or good looking.

Hyundai is still learning how to make a car feel cohesive and fun ... But they've learned cheap reliable and safe so that's hard to sneeze at

kenchan 09-15-2018 02:27 PM

oh ive driven plenty of new cars dat are garbage (rental cars during travel)

Odie 09-16-2018 01:02 PM

Display is reading 47.8 M.P.G. overall for 185.1 miles at an average of 43 M.P.H.. Read it can be off from .6 > 3 m.p.g.. Showed 50.4 at one time . Stop lights ended it . May fill it later on . Still can't post pictures .

kenchan 09-16-2018 04:14 PM

next time u fill gas, do a quick calculation how many gallons vs miles driven. if that matches ur display sounds like its caliberated correctly. some car manufactures show optimistic numbers on their display (hyundai had some class action lawsuits over da yrs)... but given the tiny engine in ur hyundai i bet it can do near 50mpg if 40mph range.

Odie 09-17-2018 01:17 AM

Filled tank . Took 5.042 gallons at 219.6 miles and the gas gauge slightly over 1/2 ( 11.9 gals. ) . This was the dealer filled tank . Calculated : 43.55 M.P.G. . Display was at 47 . The 2nd tank DISPLAY is at 44.1 overall at 67.5 miles and the gas gauge 1/2 between 3/4 and FULL . Hope the gap between DISPLAY overall gas mileage and the CALCULATED get a bit closer . The A/C was used around 1/3 of time and the 2 of us for whole tank . Filled it with summer blend (?) Top Tier SUNOCO Ultratech 89 w/E5 @ 1 click .

kenchan 09-17-2018 08:32 PM

yah, when brand new, cars tend to have poorer mpg as u probably already know.. but 43.5mpg is very good for a gasoline powered car already.

GAFIT 09-17-2018 10:16 PM

Hyundai Accent is number one...

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/7-of-th...s-on-the-road/

Ties in well with my statement at the beginning of this thread.

Odie 09-18-2018 03:34 PM

Another reason we purchased the Accent is crash test results at I.I.H.S. ( Insurance Institute Highway Safety ) . Especially offset . Can use other crash tests for comparison . 2018 Hyundai Accent : https://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/ve...t-4-door-sedan , 2018 Toyota ( Scion ) Yaris Ia : https://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/ve...a-4-door-sedan , 2016 - '19 Honda Fit : https://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/ve...oor-wagon/2016 and 2018 Toyota Corolla : https://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/ve...a-4-door-sedan . Have noticed the drainage for doors after rain is a bit slow . Will keep tabs on it .

GAFIT 09-18-2018 04:44 PM

All cars are pretty safe these days. I have to assume that the results of the article I posted are greatly skewed by either the typical driver (possibly first timers in the Accent) and how they are used (possibly racing in the Challenger).

I have a car with poorly designed door drains. It's almost ridiculous how much water a car door can apparently hold. I have to find the right time and place to occasionally leak the half gallon of water onto the ground. Wife and son like to say the car is peeing. I think they may be right. LOL

so i got a mazda3 sedan rental during my biz trip and it was doing 50mpg+. i thought the fuel gauge was broken and pumped gas to check after a 80+ mile trip from the airport and only got 1.5 forced gallons in. i drove the thing back to da airport dis am and the fuel gauge did not move. still showed over 500mile range. ..wow

kenchan 09-20-2018 12:03 PM

btw da cruising speed was 70mph for 50 miles and rest 60mph. and the engine was not gutless. it accelerated well for a car of its price.. definitely faster dan a GK.

kenchan 09-21-2018 02:23 PM

oops, i looked at da rental receipt and it was a mazda6. lol. telz u how much i’m into mazdas..

Even more impressive! That has their new skyactive turbo motor. I'm glad to see companies trying things other than hybric and diesel. Would be cool to see Mazda win at something.
