Tire Shopping

Hello everyone just joined the forum and it's almost time for me to replace all four of my 2010 Honda Fit Sport Dunlop 7000 factory/oem tires got about 23,000 miles out of them and was wondering and thought about replacing them with a 195/55R16 size because I didnt find really any good tire sizes and prices in the 185/55R16 size and I also have a CR-Z which is very similiar and shares the same platform and comes standard with the 195/55R16 and was thinking about getting the Good Year Eagle GT in the 195/55R16 because I found a good deal for about $85 a tire for them and was wondering if going slightly up in size a good idea and would it fit well and not cause any issues for my Fit and lastly has anyone had a good or bad experience with this Good Year Eagle GT or switch to a different tire size?

You'll be fine with a skinnier tire. I have Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric All Season, and Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season. No problems with either of them except the Asymmetric's did not perform too well on snow. If cost is a concern you should check out Kumho Ecsta ASX. Pretty decent tires for cheap.

Conti DW in 205 50 16 is my vote. All season and high performing. Several friends have them in my local group and preferred them over the Kumho. Tire rack lists them at $88 per so cost is comparable. Wafulz had some Eagle GT's and REALLY did not like them. Don't stress over not using the OEM tire size, nothing is worth it in that size. If you compare tire diameters it is near spot on with the 205 50 16 being only 24.1 compared to 24.0. That means your spedoo is off by like 0.2%.

I am right now on a budget so are the Good Year Eagle GT worse than the OEM/Stock Dunlops? I just want something better or the same I can deal with that level of responsiveness and refinement.. So I guess 195/55R16 will fit well?

I completley understand being on a budget... but you referenced $85 a tire...

Continental*ExtremeContact DW

These are $88 and a proven better tire. A local tire shop may even be able to price match or beat. America's Tire or Discount Tire tends to also run good promotions with $ back and other vouchers.

A 195 55 16 will be off by almost 2% making your speedo read too slow... I would advise against that...

If you can translate typical Wafulz speak they are not as good as the OEM Dunlops. Most people dislike the Dunflops though so... honestly, if you can, look into the Conti DW.

If you really meant the all-seasons then those would be the DWS and not the DW (Dry+Wet+Snow vs Dry+Wet). I have the DW summer tires on my car in 205/50R16 and I am happy with them. They came in 2nd place in a Car & Driver summer tire comparo from a few years ago. I don't know what wear will be like on my not yet 2 month old car, but they should be OK.

Well, for Cali weather and the OP being in Texas I figured they would be all season

You are right the DWS is the true all season.

I read the same comparo, and several AutoX tire tests and the DW is the best "all around." Its MUCH better in the wet than just about anything else

X2 on the 205/50R16 Conti DWSs. They're a great all season tire. I haven't experienced them on a Fit of either generation; however, on our old E60 BMW 535i they were a night and day difference in terms of ride comfort and performance than the what that vehicle came standard with.

In addition to that, the 205/50R16 is "technically" a factory tire size for the GE chassis Fit. Its the tire size ran on the 16x6.5 Mugen XJ accessory wheel.

The last time it snowed here was 1976, so no all-seasons for me. I don't think snow is quite that scarce in Dallas, but it's probably pretty close.

One of our regular participants at the local BMWCCA autoX runs Conti DW tires as street tires on his Mini S and is pleased with them (not sure what he is running for autoX, but I know it's not the Contis). A chat with him about the tires last season was another reason why I decided to give them a shot.

I just put on a new set of 205 50 16 Conti DWS last night to replace the stock Dunlops. Got 32K out of the Dunlops, which seems to be pretty good compared to what I've read here. But they were pretty well shot. No complaints about the Contis so far. They may be a little quieter, but not amazingly so. Of course, they aren't worn in yet. I expect them to get better over the next couple of weeks. But I'm happy with them.

If you are on a budget you have more choices than the Eagle GT.

While the Eagle GT is not as bad as the stock Dunlops, look further...

in 195/55-16

Kumho Ecsta 4X (Ultra High Performance All Season tire), 420 treadwear
$86 each, V speed rated, 19 lbs, 24.4" tire diameter (a bit tall for the Fit)
$88 each, 205/50-16, W speed rated, 20 lbs, 24.1" tire diameter
Tirerack test result-
Tire Test Results : Testing Value-Priced Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires

For slightly more ride comfort and lower noise for less sharp handling especially in wet then also consider:
Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105 , 420 treadwear
$83 each, 205/50-16, V speed rated, 20 lbs, 24.1" tire diameter

Ultra High performance All Season tires in general give you the best handling in dry or wet with more street comfort and longer treadlife than the various performance summer tires.

Continental ExtremeContact DWS (UHP all season tire)
$117 each, 205/50-16, W speed rated, 19 lbs, 540 treadwear
Tirerack test result-
Tire Test Results : Testing Ultra High Performance All-Season Tires
You pay more, you get more.

If ride comfort and noise is not as important as better dry and wet handling with less treadlife then-

Continental Extreme Contact DW (Max Summer tire)
$88 each, 205/50-16, W speed rated, 19 lbs, 340 treadwear
Tirerack test result-
Tire Test Results : Clash of the Titans: Testing Two New Max Performance Summer Heavy Hitters
A good value for the performance minded.
