Ticking noise at idle - normal?

Hey guys I recently got my 09 Sport 5spd and have noticed a ticking sound at idle. Almost sounds like it needs a valve adjustment or it could just be the injectors. The salesperson said it was normal. Are the injectors that loud or is there another reason for the ticking or is something up with my car? It has just over 100 miles.

I have it too; I believe it's normal because I have heard it mentioned a lot of times before. Not 100% on that though.

Mine doesn't and none of the half-dozen we've seen here. Your dealer should perform valve adjutment at least.

A valve adjustment on a 100 mile car? Maybe after the break in the sound will go away?

Surely you don't believe that valve clearances are always correct at the factory. Won't be the first to need adjustment at delivery.
Its better to get it recorded on the service log immediately. Saves confrontation later if valve damage occurs.
Interestingly the dealer service department may want to perform a clearance check if your service record shows your complaint of 'ticking' valve at 100 miles.

I wouldn't get the valves adjusted unless it is absolutely necessary. If it is just a light tick keep in mind that the fuel injectors make a ticking noise and that is normal. If it is a much louder substantial tick it would need diagnosis but I haven't seen any new Honda's yet that need valve adjustment from the factory.

Bumping this. Im thinking I might need the valves adjusted. Its pretty loud from idle up to 2000. Has anyone had honda perform this perform them under warranty even if its before the maintenance minder? In the manual it says to adjust valves if noisy at every inspection so im guessing I could do it at the 5000 mile service.

Loud valve noise is not something to take lightly as to wait for the next regular inspection/service.
DO IT NOW. RIGHT NOW.
The longer you have waited after delivery since the noise was apparently loud the less chance you have of getting it done free. But it needs to be done.

I have this too. The car has just under 100 miles on it. When I first got the car, it was completely silent. Depressing the clutch, makes the noise go away. Why would the clutch have any effect when the transmission is in neutral?

I haven't noticed this on mine yet. But on my last car, 08 Accord Coupe, after a few thousand miles maybe, I started to hear ticking, like valve tapping, only when I have the window lowered, with a wall next to the car and only while starting from idle to maybe 2,000 rpm. My dealer said it was normal. What a surprise. To me, it sounded un-Honda like.

When the transmission is in neutral but clutch out there is a load on the engine from turning the clutch plate. Dropping the clutch removes that transmission load.
As to why the tapping noise goes away when the load is removed, thats a mystery. Onlt thought I have is it changes valve timing just enough to add valve stem clearance. I'd still have them reset the clearances.

if you lift the hood and listen to the engine at idle the ticking is the injector making a slight ticking noise, but i dont think you would be able to her it when the car revved up because other engine noises would drone it out.

I agree with you; the ticking noise could be the injectors.
Try using a 1/4" rod to listen for the location.
Place one end of the rod against the injectors and the other end against your ear. Do the same at the cylinder head. Whereever the ticking is most pronounced is the location of the ticking. If its an injector nothing to be done; if its a valve you might want to have clearances checked.
