Why you shouldn't draft big rigs

Retreads.

Big Rig 1 - Simone 0 (masochist car post) - ClubSi

"I decided to go out last night amid the shitty weather conditions, was drafting behind a big rig because gas prices are rediculous. Something flew up at me from the rear of the big rig with no time to react or anywhere to go and because the road was wet I just took it head on.

Whatever hit me pretty much was followed by something dragging, the rear wheels kicked out a bit but I didn't lose line of sight of my direction and all was well...

When I stopped to see what the damage was apparently I need new fenders... and well... "

EDIT: this was not my car or experience

Not a good idea to follow or draft anyone because you have no time to react and if something happens it could be worse than just losing your bumper. Glad you were OK - a bumper is easier to replace.

Thats what you get for having a body kit. And even if that person did find the bumper it looks to be fiberglass, Im sure it was a wreck.

yeah draftings [not smart]. may be the cost of fixing it will be enough to learn how to drive properly. gas isnt THAT expensive where people need to tail big rigs. if it is, get a new job or get a different car.

I always stay at least 3 car lengths away when drafting just to avoid rocks from falling on me from the truck. It might not get me the best fuel efficiency, but it also doesn't get me the worst. Sorry for your loss, and glad to see that you're ok though.

ricohman can only hope to improve
Most bikers would know the sand storm and rocks that follow a large truck.
If I can feel that on my arms, why would I want that hitting my windshield and hood?

The person "who is not you" got off easy. Quote "kancerr"s post X20. Leave the car to a relative in your will, and play Russian Roulette with a .44 Mag revolver instead.

Ooohhh, ahhh.

If you're implying the "person who was not me" was ME you are wrong, he is a member of this forum.

That's not a body kit, that's the later front ends of the 240sx's 98-99. I see he has some skirts, but that front end (headlights/fenders) were stock. So if anything he lost his OEM bumper

Not Fun

About ten years ago I got whacked in the middle of the windshield by a chunk of retread while following a truck on an interstate near Chicago in the wee hours of the morning. It was such a loud noise that I figured I'd be needing to replace my glass (once I recovered from my near heart attack at the sudden, unexpected report), but all was well. BTW, my vehicle at the time was a very sharp two-tone blue '86 Chevy pickup.

Even though I like to get good mpg's in my Fit, I won't draft big rigs. It's too dangerous and not worth it -- both because of the hazard of a piece of flying tire and because I might not be able to react in time if the trucker made a panic stop. Again: IT'S NOT WORTH IT.

Ouch! That sucks.

...just one more reason to drive reasonably.
