Fit snow, winter tires, winter driving questions??

Good thread!
I run dedicated snow tires and over the years have tried a few brands of the ice compound tires and they have all worked well in snow but shine on ice.
Not being able to turn off the stability control without TPMS sensors is exactly the kind of thing I would not have expected. I was planning to run the new snows I had for the 2007 on the new 2015 and ignoring the light. Now I'll look for the fuse thread on how to disable the traction control.

here is a question for you guys in terms of snow wheels/tires.
I have a set 15" wheels with newish snow tires on them from our old mini cooper. the wheels are 4x100 5.5J +45 with the same center bore but I'm pretty confused on the Lug nut side of things as the mini uses bolts not nuts so how do I determine what kind of lug nuts to use on those wheels?
pretty sure they should fit just fine on the fit with 16s (2015 EX-L)

Fitment question
I just purchased a 15 Fit EX 6MT and already thinking about winter driving. I had a second set of winter wheels and tires for my previous car. The wheels won't fit, but I am hoping the tires might. The are General Altimax Arctic 205-55-16, 20mm wider bead to bead than the stock Firestones 185-55-16. The Tire/Rim calculator says the inner and outer spacing will remain the same and the diameter will be .87" larger. I am thinking that this should be okay to reuse the tires. Does anyone have any experience with this size tire on the Fit?

185/70/14 on 2010 Sport
Hey guys, new member and first post.
I have a 2010 Sport with stock alloy 185/55/16 Bridgestone Turanza's. I'm moving to colder climate and saw a set of used 185/70/14 Michelin X Ice 2's. Will these work well? Any concerns?
Thanks

That all depends on what they are mounted to. They will not mount to your stock wheels. You would need 14 x 6 wheels with a 4x100 bolt pattern. The Ice X tires are well reviewed, but remaining tread depth and age/condition will determine how well a used set performs. I am pretty certain that a 2010 Fit will have in wheel TPMS sensors, so you would have to research what happens if you don't have them and/or the added cost of the sensors and having them synced to your car.

Hey guys, I installed winter tires and the tires make a very loud humming noise between 60-80 km/h. Anybody have an idea why?
No shaking, vibrating or other telling signs apart from the noise at those specific speeds.

I had Dunlop Winter Maxx 185/55R 16 installed yesterday on the stock rims and they are awesome and ride really good. The original All Seasons just didn't cut it after 2 days of snowy roads here. I'm very happy with the results !! $475 mounted and balanced.

did they do high speed balancing? perhaps it might be the tire itself. which tire did you go with? i'm using blizzak w70s now and no noise. actually quieter than my BFG COMP2 a/s.

Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice & Snow II, I'm thinking it's the tire itself tbh. It sounds like I'm in a plane between 60-80 km'h lol

The noise will disappear in the Spring when you go back to your summer setup.

I thought tires only HUMMED if they didn't know the words?
SERIOUSLY,
If these are new tires (and the noise started immediately after fitment) its the tire tread pattern, for sure.
If its the second winter, perhaps you need to have wheel alignment checked. Can you feel 'feathering' (rougher when passing your hand around the tire, more in one direction, than the other)?
My experience is that tire tread hum is most noticeable around the speeds you are complaining about. Try to go faster or slower!

A lot of winter tires are directional, i.e. they have arrows on them pointing in the direction of rotation. Make sure yours are pointing in the right direction. Also check tire pressure while you're there.
If all is well in those regards, chalk it up to a more aggressive tread design causing more noise at highway speeds.
