check gas cap warning

2 years and 17400miles, problem free until now.

10 days ago, Check gas cap light flashes on the the dashboard computer/odometer when I start up.

dealership says just fill up with more gas, check the gas cap is on properly and wait 10 days to let the computer reset.

Well that hasn't happened.

Suggestions ?

has this happened to anyone else ?

I got this once as well for no apparent reason. With the car off I just removed the gas cap and put it back on hulk style. It cleared a few days later before the next fillup.

can't you just reset it using a OBD2 scanner?

gas cap

Don't know what an OBD scanner is.

The dealership says they can reset it but doing so may delete any other warnings that "maybe" was about to happen like e.g. the check engine light.

I was wondering if the cap was faulty ( air leak) and hence the question to you out there asking if the same problem has hit others.

Incidentally I put on the gas cap just like any regular person would .. snug / click stop.

Will give it another week and take it in if it still persists.

Many thanks for the feedback so far.

isn't that the same scanner they plug up at autozone and places like that? couldn't you run a diagnostic and have a full list of could be problems.

i think with the scanner you can selectively delete specific check engine codes that show up. correct me if i'm wrong though. but if that is true, then you can delete this code and not worry about deleting any potential real problem codes that were about to show up.

happy ending

I had a honda locking gas cap which I had not used.

i replaced the original cap with this and the warning "check gas cap" has disappeared !

just to find out whether this was the deciding factor or it was just a length of time as the dealership seemed to suggest, i have put the original back on. Let's see if the warning returns, which might suggest a cap problem ?

will keep y'all posted.

many thanks for all your helpful comments.
