check gas cap message

Hi guys,

ever had a check gas cap message show up, where the computer display is? I saw this the first time today.

2009 fit lx in canada

I confirmed the cap was securely tight with a few clicks

Ignore it. After a few cycles of engine being off and on it will go away. I had it earlier this year. It is common. Not to worry.

Smile Wow...

Filled up this weekend, then drove my daughter to her soccer game in the middle of nowhere (40+ miles)...like a dork I forgot to put the cap back on, and did not notice it until we got to her game. I was surprised no warning light came on with the gas cap dangling on the side of the car...

Just had this pop up tonight when leaving work. I was thinking of pulling the neg battery cable for few mins to re set the ecu. I now think I will wait a few start cycles to see if it goes away. But I will have to go pick up new headlight bulbs... the pass side one is out!!

Me too!

Hi-

I had the same thing happen with mine- my husband filled up my 2008 fit with gas, then drove home (only a few miles) with the gas cap hanging open (grrrr...). Later, when I got in the car, I noticed it and tightened it. A couple of days later I noticed a "loose gas cap" message and once again made sure that the cap was on tightly (it was). Now my engine light is on. I checked the manual and it says that this will happen after a loose gas cap and to give it several days to reset itself. It's been over 3 weeks and the engine light is still on- does anyone out there know what's going on and what I should do?

If you think the car is fine, you can reset the ECU.

Either borrow a reader to read then clear the code (some parts stores will loan out tools with creditcard deposit like autozone)
Loan-A-Tool® Program | In Our Stores | AutoZone.com

Or just detach the battery for about 15min, and that usually will clear it too.
If CEL come back on AFTER being cleared, you better see what the code is really about.

Thanks raytseng

I'll try detaching the battery for a bit to see if that does the trick. Thanks!

If it's been that long, you may want to have your gas cap pressure tested. It may be bad...
