Check Fuel Cap message
Check Fuel Cap message
I have the Honda lockable gas cap and every once in a while I get that message Check Fuel Cap. I make sure it clicks at least 3 times when I tighten it and even if I retighten it it still shows the message. It just goes away by itself. Does anyone else experience this??? It's getting annoying.
someone else experienced the same cap message for weeks (i think even months). since you have a locking gas cap it should be poping up unless the gas cap itself its sealing right and not holding pressure.
as a quick test when the message goes away run your OEM cap and drive around for a bit and if it doesnt come up its probably the locking cap that has an issue.

I had used a locking cap from my 88 Olds for 5 months last summer but when Sept./Oct. rolled around I started getting the check light. Why after 5 months did it fail?
When the check engine light came on in Jan., I went to the dealer.
They put the OEM cap back on, cleared the computer and everything is back to normal. The tech mentioned that he also had the check light on his Civic and just disconnected the battery to reset it. I didn't want to have to reset the radio so I left it for them to do.
It was only after I took it in on Jan 7th that it dawned on me the problem with the locking cap may have occured because of the cold weather in the fall; old rubber seal, shrinkage from the cold, etc.

You could have possibly stripped the treads on the gas cap and now it will not seal right. But, it will feel like it is being installed correctly. I work on subaru's for a living and seen this happen numerous times.
Its just a EVAP code, and honda went smart and insted of turning on the Check Engine Light every time somebody fills the car up with the key or engine on, they made it read out "check fuel cap" all it does is monitor the fuel tank pressure, to check for possible leaks. When it has less that specified pressure it throws a code warning you of a possible problem, and if the cap is leaking at all you will lose pressure and cause the Code to come up.
So either the seal on your locking gas cap is faulty, or the exteme cold is shrinking it and causing it to leak.

I don't have a locking gas cap, but I do have the error message. The last time I got gas, the attendant forgot to tighten the cap, so the message went off. When I checked the cap, it wasn't even screwed in one bit! Anyways, I screwed it in, and according to the owners manual, it should turn off within a few days, if not, have the dealer look at it. I've been going all week and almost a full tank has gone by, and I still have the light, so I'm gonna make an appointment next week to update the SRS and reset that stupid message. I also got a random "side airbag" light one time but it disappeared and never came back.
When you get a Check Engine or SRS light it will store itself in the ecu so you can retrieve it later, usualy they will turn off after a few days so you dont stare at it. To delete the codes just pull the hazard fuse or the negative battery terminal and let it sit for a couple mins, but be sure when you start the car again to let it sit and re-learn for like 10-15mins.
I'm also in central FL -- have a Storm Silver AT Sport. We had a thread running awhile back about the gas cap. It can happen with any cap. I only give it one turn/click and haven't had a problem with the gas cap light (20,084 miles on the odometer -- and I forgot to watch it turn over all those zeros, darn). Although we did have a cold snap in FL, it's nothing compared to what northern Fits are tolerating. If your cap doesn't fit snugly, though, it could be that a slight shrinkage of the seal triggered the warning.
