Did anyone in Canada get a locking gas cap?

Hi,

I noticed that people are selling this in the US (one for the Element but can apply to Fit) but when I talked to our local dealers, they're not quite sure if it will fit and the price is pretty scary. The cap itself is about $60, plus taxes, plus $40+ for rekeying.. all added up to over 100 bucks. With after market ones, they're concern about triggering the check engine light and might affact air care due to pressure difference.

Anyone has experiences that you can share? Thanks

WK

i'm not from canada, but I do have a locking gas cap.

it works fine on the fit, the price your quoting seems high even with the exchange rate.

the only complaint I have is that the key for the gas cap is way to big.

Thanks for the info V. does the locking cap fit into the original cap holder strap that it will dangle from the flap and you don't have to put it somewhere else when opened?

I talked to another local Honda dealer (Richmond Honda) and he was pretty sure that the one for the Element will not work on the Fit. I wonder if there are differences between the US and Canadian Fits. Most of the ones I found online they don't ship to Canada so might be some reasons behind this. Too bad no one from Canada can confirm.

Bullshit. The Element and the Fit use the ***same freaking part number***. And yet they have 2 prices for it. And yes I am using the one from the Element, not going to rekey

Any further questions regarding if it works, refer to the part in asterisks.

I ordered one from Collage Hill Honda along with a Fit keychain, it works just fine. Just make sure you don't use UPS to ship it, as they charged me $30+ for custom broker fee!!! I wish I had known the Element one will work for the Fit!!!

Thanks guys for the info. I'll try to find one locally, I know about the broker fees. FedEx does the same thing, it can cost as much as the item itself.

Just get it shipped to Point Roberts for US shipping prices, install it, drive back.

Take advantage of the slightly cheaper gas while you're down there. Don't think anybody is going to call you on it. I think at ~$30 USD shipped + the gas of going to PR + $2 handling charge at The Letter Carrier, it'll still be cheaper than most, if not all outlets in Canada.

I called Kingsway Honda last Thu and they got it for me on Fri. Picked up and installed no problem. Only thing is you cannot use the strap to hold the cap since it's bigger than the original one, so you have to put it aside when opened. CEL is one of the concern but it didn't go on, so far so good. Costs $54.89 plus taxes. Not bad and don't have to deal with shipping and custom. I did not rekey the lock, just keeping the ones came with the cap. They are same size as the car keys. Some one from another thread said you can open with any Fit key which is not true, even though you can insert the car key into the cap but you cannot unlock, so no worry about other honda owners opening your cap.
The part number is 17680-SAA-G00, it's originally for the Honda Element. WK

Mine is from a Honda Element, and cost me an extra 20$ to get it rekeyed to the stock key. Works great!

Umm unless the Fits up there are significantly different as far as tank anatomy. The ones in the US don't need a locking gascap. There is a cross piece down past where the gas nozzel will go. In order to siphon gas from the tank you'd need a hose about the size of tubes used on a windshield washer.

I'm not so worried about people siphoning gas as I am about people adding "goodies" into your gas tank.

Locking Gas Cap

I picked up a Locking Fuel Cap (for the Toyota FJ - Part #C0170-00020) from Open Road Toyota-Richmond today. The price including PST/GST came to C$25.99.

Out of curiosity, I passed Richmond Honda and inquired if a locking fuel cap was available either for the FiT or Element and I was told that there was none available for the FiT and the one for the Element won't work on the FiT. I was quote C$50.00 for the Element!

Hmmm, you wonder sometimes....
