Manual Tire Pump?

Hey guys,

Does anyone use a manual air pump for their tires? A stand-up one or a foot pump.

I want to get one – I like the simplicity of the idea, and don’t mind doing a little exercise. I figured the stock tires are small enough and the car is lightweight – shouldn’t be impossible?

I use a bike pump to adjust the pressure in my Fit and Nissan Leaf tires all the time. I'm not sure I would want to regularly pump up a leaking tire, but for small adjustments it's quick and easy. My pump has a pressure gauge that's relatively accurate compared to my stand-alone gauge, so it's pretty much a one step process. I can adjust all four tires in a couple minutes.

I have an air compressor, but generally don't bother plugging it in, switching it on, covering my ears (it's loud), and then draining it afterwards (because in my cold garage I get a lot of moisture in the tank) if all I'm doing is adding a couple psi to my tires.

I don't... though my dad has the foot one for his bicycle and it's kind of a pain even for a bike.

A while ago I got a cordless compressor (similar to this one: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002723314563.html), on a sale it was under $30 shipped and it's small enough to fit in the glovebox. It would take it forever to go from empty of course but it's perfectly fine for small adjustments or to top up tires that had been sitting in storage all winter and are always a bit low.

I do occasionally. I have a stand-up pump from 50's. Filling up tires requires some physical exercise, but nothing a healthy adult couldn't do. I would say biggest challenge is to find a decent quality pump nowadays.

I went through two or three foot pumps. What happens is, the hinge sort of thing is thin metal so eventually it bends or crushes to the side, breaking the pump. I've had a couple of electric ones, and found that the more expensive ones ($50 vs. $30) are worth the extra few bucks. They're faster and last longer.

Plus, it's not only for your car. A few years ago I was at my friend's summer house. Another friend said let's take her big SUV to dinner. Wanted me to drive. I start the car, the low tire pressure light goes on. I say I don't want to drive without checking. Get my tire gauge. Tires were like 10 psi. All four. Supposed to be around 50.

Went to dinner, came back, I said I can't let you drive home this way, They went off to have fun. I took my little electric pump to fill up her huge tires. Took over a half-hour.

I used a bike pump for years when I was living in apartments. Recently I picked this up. Totally worth it.
