Replacing timing chain tensioner

Hi fellow Fit owners,
I have had an engine issue under diagnosis for a few months now. For reference, my Jazz (I live in France, it's not called Fit) is from 2002 and has the manual 1.2 i-DSi with ~85k km on the clock.
There's a clear ticking noise when the engine is under load, resembling the infamous L-engine valve tick. I'm going to adjust the valve clearance soon, but I've talked to 3 different car mechanics who thought the noise might come from the timing chain, likely a loose tensioner. As a matter of fact, the ticking is absent at idle or coast, whereas it should be permanent if it was the valves.
So to explore my options in the case the valve adjustment is insufficient, I have a few questions if anyone on this forum has ever serviced their timing chain:
- is it possible to do it without removing the engine from the bay ?
- can you confirm the tensioner is mechanical (and not hydraulic) ? I'm kind of an engine mechanic newbie so I just wanna make sure to have the correct answer the next time someone asks me. Also not dealing with hydraulics seems less nerve wracking.
