Sport vs' Trunk mount bike rack
Sport vs' Trunk mount bike rack
This is in regards on how to fit a 29er mountain bike on the outside of the Fit. We get fairly dirty and the bike doesn't really fit in the car very well. I REFUSE to destroy my interior with the bike. So after searching for a while on the site I decided a few different things.
1. I didn't have the money to get the roof rack that I wanted.
2. I refuse to chance the warranty by putting on a hitch mount bike rack. the local dealer was cool with having it for bike purposes but nothing was in writing.
3. The only logical answer was to go to the bike store and try out a trunk mount rack with the spoiler off the car.
Turns out there are some holes where the spoiler was and if you pour water in the holes it comes out of the 3rd brake light. I found a Saris Bones 3 801($169 MRSP) that will work. The spoiler has to go back onto the car after you mount the top straps. You will need to add some rubber washers to the three inside studs of the spoiler to prevent water from seeking into the interior. You can leave the rack on the car or get used to pulling that spoiler. I hope to get some pictures of this tomorrow.
After buying this car and then getting into mountain biking I will say that if warranty wasn't a factor a trunk mount bike rack would be the way to go. Unfortunately, I've got 60k miles to go before the extended warranty runs out.

the hitch wont void your warrenty
im the same way right now
if i put my trunk mount rack im scared that the spoiler would get messed up
so now im on a hunt for a hitch for a decent price in my area

Myself im using a hitch mount on the Fit, keeps things away from the paint and more secure then the trunk style ones. Also doubles up if you need to move a trailer or something too.
Fitster I think I payed under $100 for my Hitch through Cap-It in Coquitlam
I know for a fact that having a hitch on the vehicle wouldn't not void any warranty on the car, I have spoken to my local Honda Stealership with regards to it and as long as you stay within your towing capacities you are fine. If you are running just a bike rack you are perfectly safe
