Diy: Acura mdx map light roof console

well guys i had seen someone do this already w/ the cl map lights but i love my ray-bans too much lol . so i went w/ an mdx concole instead.

lets begin.

so first i took the console and made a stencil for the hole i needed to cut.

measure 10 times and cut once i always say. once i knew the fit was good i started so solder 2 wires onto the console since i didn't get a plug w/ it.

since the console wasnt the same color (it was dark grey) i bought some paint to match it up.

once it dried i put it in the roof. NOTE*** i had to use the foam bloack that came out when i cut the headliner to create some room for the sunglasses holder. no cutting or anything just pulled the headliner down a bit and stuff it in between it and the roof. its exactly 2 inches just like the compartment is deep. the console has 2 tabs on one side to hold it on so i only screwed it in by the lights. i used 2 wooden blocks and a paint mixer stick as a bracket for the screws and to keep to console from falling out. **sry no pics of that i was trying to beat the rain**

splice one wire into the red/wht wire on your dome light plug and the other to a ground. (i used the same as the dome light which is the screw hole for it).

finally put your dome light back in place amd enjoy

drop some comments and rep my way if you like

Thanks for the DIY. It seems like there a little gap with the console and the ceiling, but that proproly due to the shape of the headliner.

PS. Good to see Staedtler

you can get the accord one also. and you don't have to paint
it. i did the same thing a while back and got one from an accord.
matches the interior pretty good.
i also think the odyssey has one also.

There are like 1,000 of these on eBay, you're gonna pay 3-6X more money buying one of them new. Honda's price is ridiculous for anything with homelink.

Is that the only way to get it? With Homelink I mean? I don't care about that, I just want maplights/sunglasses holder. How about the Accord one?

the homelink is just a 12v power and a ground. you should be able to splice into the map light wires for that.

Follow the good advice given to me, get the MDX with the Homelink. It doesn't add anything to the price and the buttons are small enough that no one will ever notice. I am going to experiment with making mine functional, just because I think a Fit with a working Homelink opener would be cool. I'll be installing mine tomorrow, along with four new speakers Woot!

head my words man. measure measure measure and then cut. better to cut not enough than too much lol. the homelink is super easy to do. i pulled the console back out soldered one little wire from the other pin to the + wire and wallahhhh homelink activated

You mean the third pin that goes to the OE wiring in the MDX right? And did you run a wire directly to ground from the console or did you splice it into the dome light wire? My console map lights aren't working and i want to make sure that I wired it the same way you did...

i just spliced a small piece into the + for the homelink right by the console. my ground i ran a wire back to the dome w/ the +. i put a circle bunt on the end and screwed it in w/ one of 2 screws that holds the domelight on which is the actual ground. if you dont screw it in hard enough the grund wont make contact.
