How much is my 300K mile Sport worth?
How much is my 300K mile Sport worth?
This car is frankly starting to bother me with its dependability.
I was hoping it would start to get tired by now so I could have an excuse to get the 2012 when it comes out, but this car seems to have become aware of my plan. It has 287K miles on it, and I've done nothing but regular maintenance for the last 50K. The suspension is still stiff, the engine is as strong as ever.
Even the tires seem to be lasting longer. The current set of Yokahamas is 60K miles deep and still have plenty of life.
So, my quandary. Given the premium being paid for used cars due to the low inventory, it seems like it might be a good time to cut her loose and let someone else do the next 300K. I'm hoping the 2012 Fit will be available within a few months.
What the hell do I ask for a 300K mile Blaze Orange Fit Sport 5-speed that is mechanically freakishly sound? I know I should keep it, but I really am just getting tired of driving the crap out of the same car for so long.

Oh yeah I would never trade to a dealer. $6-7k would be pretty sweet considering I'd counted on $2-3 tops at this point.
Last car I sold was a '99 VW Jetta TDI with 315K miles. Got $5700 for it. I've been having pretty good luck with resale values.

And a dealer won't even take it on a trade with that many miles.

i agree, i think trading it in would be tough. i wouldnt expect over $4500 for it. that is a crap load of miles!
personally, i would keep it as a second car. it wouldnt be worth giving up for less than $6000 if it is in the state it is in now.
build a race car out of it?

Those glass transmissions sure are popular these days.
Keep the 300k-mile Fit. Why tack on payments when you have no reason?

I think you'd get $4K out of it at the most if you were VERY patient. Otherwise, $3K if you wanted to sell it within 30 days.
Zippy chance of getting anywhere near $7K for a car with 300,000 miles on it - average mileage cars are selling for $9K now.
Honestly, if I were in your shoes I'd drive the car until it literally gives you a reason to no drive it any longer (engine failure, transmission failure, etc.). Start saving money now so that when that day does come, and come it will, you'll be in an ever better financial position to buy a new car than you are today.
BTW, thanks for the awesome news that a well cared for FIT can exceed 300,000 miles of use!

First of all, I'm not sure what kind of idiot would lie about the mileage on his car to impress some car geeks on a messageboard. Here's a pic.
Secondly, you people seem to have no understanding of the current state of the used car market. I posted the car on Craigslist yesterday morning for $5700, and took it down after getting 2 offers for that price, and one for $6K, sight unseen, cash, for immediate delivery.
I lucked out and found a 2004 Prius with 155K for $6500, so I'm buying that. The owner needs to keep it for a few more weeks before she moves, so I'm delaying the sale of the Fit.
As for maintenance, I changed the oil with Mobil1 0W-20 every 7K, and ran HKS exhaust and K&N Typhoon intake for its entire life. Really I'm just selling it because a). I'm bored with it, and b). I can save $50 a week on gas with the Prius.

I understand partisanship as a Fit owner, but I'll refer you to this thread...
$1700 total maintenance cost over 300K miles, original battery pack and inverter. And that's just one of the stories.
Prius 300K Club.
One of my best friends is a certified Toyota mechanic. Refurbished battery packs go for $1K. Inverters are down to $500. And they go 300K easily without failing. It's a no-brainer.
I've logged over a million miles as an independent courier in Boston and Phoenix over the last 15 years. I have a pretty good sense of how to keep my overhead down. The Fit was good for bigger freight, but now I do mostly small parcels.
