Ok, the manual in the car says 10.8 gals approximately. I put in 11 gals is this within the approximate range? I know the filler neck and other odds and ends hold gas but I don't remember ever seeing the amount "approximate"

I have put as much as 13 gallons in the fuel tank by filling to the top... I have been filling to the top for 6 year with out any problems so don't bother telling me that doing this is bad to do.

I agree. The tank will hold 50 litres (13 usg) if you have the patience and a light touch on the filling nozzle. I have filled the tank to overflowing on numerous occasions and have not yet suffered for it.
The filer pipe is very long as the tank is under the front seat.
From when the automatic shut off first activates you have +/- 10 litres (2 usg) remaining unfilled capacity.
I have also run it dry on one occasion to verify the real capacity.
No secondary effect from that either despite Honda warnings. It may help that I did not do it when the weather was hot. It was probably less than 50F so chances of overheating the pump were reduced.

The guys that don't fill to the top have only a an estimation of what their actual fuel mileage is... Even when it is over 100 degrees here I have had no problems..

That doesn't make sense. I fill my tank to the first click every time, just because I'm only putting 10 gals in my car would not mean I would get any less MPG then someone that puts 13 Gals

Subis, the point is like I mentioned, I've never this this estimate before.

Your actual mileage isn't changed but filling to the top is a more accurate way to see what your fuel mileage is.... I think a lot of the post by guys upset by a drop in fuel mileage is due to thinking that pumps always click off when the tank is filled to the same level every time.... I pumped gas at a station I managed when in my early twenties and know that the number of pumps being used at the same time or an air compressor kicking in can slow all of the pumps at the same time... If numerous people filling up at the same time you are there will a decrease in the rate of flow through your nozzle, as they stop pumping there is an increase increase causing it to kick off sooner... My mileage figures were all place when relying on the filling until the first click and became consistent by filling to the top as long as I was driving the same way between fill ups.

Ok, got it! Sure makes sense to me. So now you can say you've seen it too. I believe TC already explained the variance of a lot of factors where you can pump a bit more than 10.8 gal.

If "approximate" was a show-stopper for me, then I would take the 10.8 gal as a spec, of the tank. We can only speculate why Honda chose the word approx. But I would take that as being real-world application rather than tech. spec. usage. Real-world, considering the location of the tank, length of the feeder hose, people's fill-up habits (one-click, to the neck, etc.).

I see that as good ole' fashioned non-commit "wiggle room" on Honda's part.

 

Just wondering if you guys who top off worry about room for expansion. I've seen with some cars and also bikes vapor lock problems happen when doing this.
