Rear end noise?

2007 Fit base with 100,000mi
Just got it recently, haven't driven 100 mi yet, very clean car.

PROBLEM:
A light "roar" from the rear end starting at 40 mph. Tested on a new smooth asphalt road.

Not really loud, can carry on a conversion and hear the radio, it's a little bit unnerving. Also, it's not a "metallic" grinding noise.

1. Is this normal?
2. If it's a problem where can I look for solution?

Could be tires? Have you checked 'em out?

Swap tires from front to back and retry, if no change check rear wheel bearings, check that shoes are adjusted properly.

There's not many things it could be on this car so should be easy to isolate.

As said by ikutoisahobo and Wanderer.

Very possible tire noise or bearing noise.

How do the tires look? Are they worn uneven? Does the tread look bad?

Some low grade tires will be noisy even when new. Like Sunny and Mastercraft to name a couple.

What brand and size are they? If your not sure of what to look at on the tread then post a few pics of a side view and as straight on as you can get so we can look at them.

Thanks, now I have some direction.
I ran my hands over the tires, they seem "uneven"........this could be it.
*I will remove the rear tires tomorrow and take a look at them.

........so, if the tires are worn unevenly, should I replace them? There is plenty of thread left.

While I'm at it, will look at the breaks as well.

Thanks!

Took off the tires. It's the tires.
They have uneven ware on the inside half of the thread, it's easy to understand why they are noisy.

ARE THEY DANGEROUS?

Depends on how bad they've gotten. Regardless, you're going to need an alignment if you're getting cupping or otherwise uneven wear. Sounds like you've got too much negative camber for starters.

Lots of thread left.

Ok, now I didn't know the rear wheels could be aligned.

Thanks!

Yeah the rear can only be adjusted by shims.

If the cupping as somewhat bad theres no way to help it. Unfortunately cupping on tires can not be reversed once it has reached a certain point.

You could move the noisy tires to the front. If the tires are hard and old, though, they will be LOUD.

Not dangerous, though. Just annoying.

In the future, make sure you rotate the tires every 6 to 8K miles.

I will schedule an alignment.
