Thumbs up 2008 Honda Fit Mystery Misfire/Hesitation ***SOLVED***

Hello everyone. New to posting, been around a while reading. I was having the mystery occasional misfire and occasional hesitation and thought I would post how I solved mine here since it seemed quite a few folks never updated their threads with solutions.

2008 Honda Fit, 153,000 miles, manual transmission.

Symptoms: Occasional misfire, sometimes with engine light, sometimes without. Occasional hesitation above 3k rpm. Occasional "shuddering/lurching" in slow traffic. Stalling at stops when engine was cold.

Installing new coil packs solved the misfires.
Valve adjustment solved the hesitation, shuddering/lurching, and the stalling.

Total cost $170 and a few hours of my weekend. ($150 for the coil packs, $10 for a 19 mm socket, and $10 for gasket maker and nitrile gloves).

Running like new again and it's been about a week!

What were the clearances before adjustment?
What brand name of coils did you use?
if your car is automatic, do you feel vibration on your door armrest (idling in drive, engine warm)

Didn't check to see what the clearances were sitting at...but all the intakes were very loose on .006 so I tightened them back down to that. All the exhaust were tight, so opened them up to .011.

I used the Hitachi coil packs.

Mine's a manual, but the occasional shuddering/lurching in traffic (idling in neutral and 5-10 mph) could be felt in the arm rest and the rest of the car.

Hitachi IGC0053 For coils?
When I did valve clearance inspection at 60,000 mi, I adjusted out of specks valves only (about 50% were out of specks, the out of range clearance was .008 for 4 intakes and 4 exhaust valves )

Yes, the Hitachi IGC0053 coils are the ones I used. This is the first time I've adjusted mine, so at 150k miles, I'm not surprised they were all out of spec lol.

Where did you find those coils for that price? Cheapest I've seen that one is $47 each on Amazon.

I found them on craigslist. I was lucky...someone had purchased them and they didn't fit their car.

Resurrecting Frankenstein's monster here.

Did you need a 19 mm deep socket or you just didn't have one?
I assume you used something like Permatex high temp gasket maker?

I used Permatex Ultra Black 3.35 Ounce Maximum Oil Resistance RTV Silicone Gasket Maker. It only requires a small drop on one corner as long as your gasket still looks good.

The only reason I needed the socket was to check the plugs since I was in there any way.

I also would not recommend going cheap on the coils. I think the ones I got off craigslist were so cheap because they were fakes. Two of them melted to the plugs and I had to scrape the pieces out with dental tools before I could replace them with store bought hitachi's lol

Thanks for the info.

I replaced the coils last year with Hitachi's so I'm halfway there. Only recently in the last few months did I start getting hesitation and in the last two weeks, that's gotten worse. I'm at 212,000, too......so it's not surprising to me that's is jacked right now .

Thanks again!

I'm using the eBay coils, $25 for a set of 4 new shipped. 8k miles so far, no issues. I pull it out at oil change to check. Completely fixed my idle stumble issue.
