Removal of the "magic seat", anyone done it, is it hard to do?
So I was reading about the B-spec racing series and they were commenting on the differences between the Mazda 2 and our Fit and they stated that the "magic seat" weighs THREE HUNDRED POUNDS!!! Just removing that would have the Fit weighing in as much as the smaller Mazda 2, imagine that. Now, I do use the rear seats for passengers when I got back home to visit my kids, but other than that, they're "just there".
So, has anyone removed the rear seats and if so, how involved is it
I know this, removing 300lbs out of this car when I head down to the Dragon would improve greatly upon a really good handling car even further AND improve the fuel economy too, sounds like a win win to me

I know for the GD3 there is like 3-4 bolts under the seat and thats it....... but our seats were a lot light than that. i believe they were talking about ALL the seats including the passenger too because i find it hard to believe its 300lbs just for the rears.

Removing the rear seats in the GE8 is very easy. The rear bench is in two parts and each is secured via two bolts (so 4 total). Just lift up the flap behind the seats and you will see the bolts.
Ive removed the seats before and agree with FitVic; there is no way the rear seats by themselves weigh 300lbs. I would guess 100-130lbs. The front seats weigh quite a bit more.

I think you guys are right about this one but since its so easy to remove the rear seats, they will be coming out before I go down to the Dragon next year for sure, don't need them for that trip anyways

Upon further review, it may be easy to remove and cut down the weight by almost 90 lbs, would it even be worth it, really? I'm not auto-X or track guy, but when I go down to the Dragon/Cherahola/route 28, I'd like to improve even further upon the car's handlng.
What do you guys think

If you don't need them remove them. Easy enough to put back in. 10 minute job total and that includes hauling them out to the vehicle. Acutally mine is a bit more time involved now because I have the J's racing harness bar bolted in. Losing 75lbs (3%) give or take is nothing to sneeze at and it's free.
Will it actually improve handling, depends on the driver and what they like the vehicle to do. By removing them the car becomes even a bit more weight biased to the front. I have noticed a more squirelly rear-end with hard braking into a corner, but I like that, makes me feel alive and keeps you on your toes.

Yeah, those seats hardly weigh anything. If you really want to lighten the fit though, just pull everything but the drivers seat. I took the interior out to do an audio install and I bet I could have it all out (well, not now because of all the wires for the amp but on a stock one) in less than an hour and a half. The bolts that hold the seats and centerconsol are the only ones to this job. The rest is knowing where to pull.

Hey everyone, reviving a really old thread here.... how did you separate the rear seat from the rear carpet covering the trunk area?
For my 2007 GD, it appears that the rear seats' upholstery (carpet) and the carpet covering the trunk area is one-piece that is split for the driver/passenger seats respectively but becomes one piece at the trunk area. It appears, also, that if I could remove the child seat tether brackets in the rear seat backs, I might be able to remove the carpet... but I can't figure out how to remove these tether brackets. I can unbolt the rear seat bolts, but seems like I'd have to pull out both driver and passenger seat backs simultaneously as one piece, because of the carpet.
How did you all work around the carpet on the seat back to remove the seats?
