Sound deadening questions!

Looking for user experiences with cheap or offbrand or even unorthodox sound deadening!

I hate the price of all the namebrands. its not worth $200+ for me, Id just as soon spend the money on louder equipment!

So I commenced researching, and here are a few things I found that may or may not be worth the time and money! Let me know guys!

Key things: Im looking for buzzing and rattling removal/reduction, cleaner sound from teh stock speakers as they sound perfectly fine once they are broken in and matched with a good equalizer from my soon to be installed doubledin.

These are some websites/forums I found info at.

First up, sprayable rubberized undercoating covered in aluminum duct tape
How I stumbled onto cheap sound deadening... - Toyota Yaris Forums - Ultimate Yaris Enthusiast Site

Second up is a roll of rubber coated with metal film. This shows promise!
CHEAP Sound Deadening - TuneMyToyota.com

Third is questionable. A member on Team Integra ONLY applied under front seats and behind dash. His goal was heat reduction, but Ive found thermal insulation sometimes does a decent (at least noticable) job of sound reduction/deadening
Review: Cheap noise and heat insulation - Team Integra Forums - Team Integra

And finally, here is one I have no doubt would work. its basically the great stuff offered in multiple styles for different jobs, and this guy offers for a reasonable price to performance ratio. My research says this stuff works, but again, I have to say I dont like spending a lot of money!
Sound Deadener Showdown - Your Source for Sound Deadening Products and Information

I am in no way promoting any of these products. I am attempting to get MORE user experience so I can make a final decision. I dont intend these links as advertising, simply seeing whats out there and if any users have bought and tried them, and simply havent posted results!

Thanks for your time guys, Im looking forward to some discussion!

Been in the audio game a LONG time, and I can tell you the cheap peel and seal crap at homedepot/lowes is junk it will NOT stay on vertical panels in high heat/humidity areas. Your main brand items like Secondskin, Alpha damp, Audio Technix and etc are proven deadeners that work. I personally have Secondskin and Alpha damp in my fit with only my floor board to do, just haven't made time to do it yet.

Currently there is a sale on Alpha Damp, CLD tiles for 50% off, just follow this;

50% off EVERYTHING at DIYMA.com inCLUDING ALPHADAMP!!!
Coupon code = MyOatmeal.com

Once you are checking out, if you buy something be sure to put the code in 50% off is hella cheap on the alpha damp CLD pack. One pack is enough to do 100% coverage on your roof with a little left over, and since you really don't need 100% coverage on doors you could probably make a CLD pack stretch for all four doors and the roof at 25% coverage.

Thanks. Have you noticed an actual difference in sound? Ive dealt with the peel stuff when I helped family in the past with HVAC and it is sticky as crap, just never knew if it actually worked as a sound deadener

I went the Peel and Seal route. Purchased a few $15 rolls from Lowes. First I did the doors. I did a layer in the inner skin and then a layer on the outer sheet metal and made sure to cover up the hole with a cut out piece of cardboard. I didn't really notice any decreased road noise after doing all four doors. What I did notice was that the doors closed more easily and with a nicer "thunk" sound. Then I did the rear floors and the trunk/spare tire well with a layer. I also added a 1/2" thick carpet padding on top of the Peel and Seal as an attempt to further dampen any noise. After all of this I can say that it was significantly quieter. The humming drone noise that came from anywhere behind the front seats was virtually gone. I have yet to do the front seating area, but I have a feeling when I do it will be most significant. All of the noise is from the front floorboard and firewall. I'm not going to attempt the firewall area bc that's a lot of taking apart and putting back together, which means more potential for rattles.

I'm sure some of the dedicated sound deadening material, like the 10mil stuff that Fit4SPL posted is better, but if you're just modding for fun and want to save money I'd go with the Lowe's / Home Depot route. You could even double layer and it'll still be cheap. Good Luck!

Fit4SPL, though you say the peel and seal doesnt stay vertical, did you notice any difference at all? a couple cheap magnet sheets glued in would help it stay if it does make a difference

Peel N Seal will not stay on a vertical surface if you are in a HIGH heat area as well it can emit a tar smell depending on where you buy it from. As for adding things to make it stick you would be increasing the cost to the point of you could have bought real sound deadener at that point.

Bottom line is the stuff sold at home depot/lowes is not designed for cars and while some say it works, I have never seen it do as well as a automotive designed sound deadener.
