Ask: Problem with CR-Z AT Shift Knob

Hi,
I read on CR-Z forum that they able to replace their stock AT CR-Z shift knob with Honda FIT (GE) Leather shift knob (AT/Automatic Transmission).
So I figure the CR-Z shift knob will work for my 2013 Honda Fit too.

I manage to install the CR-Z Shift knob, and bolt them using the 2 bolt.
Everything seems OK, until I try to take out my key from the ignition...
well, the key won't go into "Lock" position so I can NOT take out the key...
Then I realize this must be cause by the shift mechanism...
I press the button on the CR-Z shift knob and I feel it is NOT moving freely...
then I realize that when I put in the CR-Z shift knob,
I feel like I am pushing in the "push rod" in...
this must be the cause...

I then take out my CR-Z shift knob and return the stock shift knob back...
voila, I can take out the key from the ignition again...

Turn out the PLASTIC ROD/PLUNGER Stick on our Fit is LONGER then
the one in CR-Z.

Ok, to make it clear here is what the Plastic Rod/Plunger Stick look like
on a Honda Accord (I see this picture when I search with Google, but this picture is from a Honda Accord who had same problem like me).
the Plastic Rod/Plunger Stick on our Fit had black color though...
I had not took picture of our Fit Rod/Plunger cause it is already late
night...

I check at Honda Parts catalog and looks like I can NOT buy this Plastic Rod/ Plunger Stick alone but I need to buy the complete Bracket Set !!!
That is quite expensive at around $70...
My question is, do you know any place where I can buy similar Plastic Plunger/White Rod like this?

I think I can easily cut the current Plastic Rod/Plunger and solve the problem,
but at the same time I worry if I cut too much and I don't have spare plastic plunger, that mean I will not be able to drive my car...
so if anybody here know how/where to get this Plasctic Rod/Plunger,
please let me know.
Thanks.

below is the picture (illustration purpose from Honda Accord shift mechanism)

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here...

Whenever I get back to Houston from S.Dakota in a few days, I'm going up to a dealership and hopefully measuring how much of the plastic would have to be cut off to make the Fit's plunger the same length - assuming it's that easy of a fix.

If you end up cutting a bit too much off, couldn't you still shift by manipulating the plunger rod without the handle attached? It wouldn't be convenient, nor look very nice, but it seems to me the car would be perfectly drivable.

Perhaps a wooden dowel from a hardware store could replace the rod? What does the other end look like—is it just a plain rod, or is there some sort of fitting on the lower end?

What a Coincidence,
I just back from my Honda Dealer,
to pick up the ROD/PLUNGER that I had ordered since last weekend...
I plan to CUT them shorter and to be safe, I bought TWO piece,
so If I broke one, I can still modify the other one without having to wait
for another part shipment.

Now Pay Attention,
You can NOT order this ROD/PLUNGER using GE model,
because on the part catalog, you can NOT bought this ROD/PLUNGER separate but had to bought the whole assy... which is EXPENSIVE...

but if you check GD Spare Part Catalog,
you can buy them separately and they look exactly the same as the GE one !!!

so I order it,
Here is the part number# 54136-SLN-A81

ROD A, LOCK PIN for 2007 HONDA FIT|54136-SLN-A81

I will update once I cut this ROD/PLUNGER...
hopefully tonight if I am not too tired

Done!
Finally I am able to get it installed.
The FIT ROD/PLUNGER were actually NOT longer than CR-Z's ROD/PLUNGER,
but the different is, the CR-Z one have it's top end cut at an angle,
while Fit one have it's top end flat.
So, I cut the Fit Rod/Plunger at an angle like CR-Z,
and then I also need to trim the outer diameter near the top,
because the hole inside CR-Z Shift knob have smaller diameter,
compare to Fit's shift knob.(actually it is not a square but kind of rectangular shape). But I keep the length the same.
Above picture are CR-Z's Rod/Plunger so you can have idea how much angle you need to cut.
Also when you plug the Rod/Plunger into the Shift BASE/Assy hole,
make sure you push it all the way in (there is a square like socket/female socket at the bottom end of the Rod/Plunger), shake it to the left and right until you manage to get it seat onto the male socket at the base).

Cool! Do you have any pictures of your outcome? Does it work properly with just the angling, or does it NEED the outer diameter trimming?

And do you think it's possible we could just... Order the CR-z select lever assembly and tear out the shaft/plunger mechanism? I get the feeling that'd be a more or less direct fit...

I'll save up and order the whole shift assembly ASAP. The less I have to permanently alter my shifter, the better lol. I'll post any findings when I have them!

Hi, I haven't took any picture cause I install it last night,
but it does work properly... oh, don't forget to put plenty of Lithium Grease on all the parts (rod, shift knob hole, and shift assy hole),
because it would help make the mechanism feel smoother..

You could just order the CR-Z Assy but it cost something like $80 just the assy, not including the shift knob itself... oh also don't forget to order the little plastic bolt cover,... believe it or not, but the shift knob and it's little plastic bolt cover were sold separately...
to be save also order the 2 small bolts...

What I did was, I keep my old shift rod and bought an extra shift rod because if somehow I fail in modifying the shift rod, I can always put the
old shift rod and old shift knob back and continue to use the car,
until I have a chance to get another shift rod...
(heck, I bought 2 extra shift rod preparing to fail 2 times hahaha,
but turn out it is perfect on the first time, so now I have 2 extra shift rod doing nothing) hahaha

oh, it does work properly just with angling, but you also had to trim
the outer diameter too otherwise, the shift rod would tend to stuck with the shift knob and do not have free play... this would result in a little bit
"stuck" kind of feeling on the press button mechanism...

ok to make it simple,
when I pulled my old shift knob out, the shift rod stay with the shift assy,
but when I pulled my CR-Z shift knob out, the shift rod came out and stay with the shift knob... after I trim the outer diameter, the shift rod now
stay with the shift assy when I pull the CR-Z shift knob out.

another thing to consider is, although you can buy whole CR-Z shift knob assy and tear their rod out,
of course it will be perfect fit (the angling) with the CR-Z shift knob,
but then it might not be able to insert properly into Honda FIT shift ASSY...
because as I said at the other end of the rod, there is a hole that fit
perfectly with the other small rod inside the FIT assy...
to make it easy, it is like a LEGO with the hole to fit on top of another lego brick....

you know what, it is easier if you took out your shift rod and look at both end of it, and I am sure you will understand what I mean,
Good Luck with your modification

My FIT interior now looks much more luxurious and modern with the CR-Z shift knob... I simply don't understand why the CR-Z owner like
the OPTIONAL Leather wrap Honda Fit shift knob better...
the saying that the grass on neighbor lawn always looks greener than ours is what happened here hahaha
I found out about this CR-Z shift knob can fit Honda FIT because those people in CRZ forum change their shift knob to Honda Fit one...
so in a way this is good because now I have a much better looking shift knob thanks to the information from the folks at CR-Z forum
The folks at CR-Z forum said that their shift knob is kinda like Star Trek Enterprise theme... well all I can say is, Take us to WARP SPEED !!! hahaha
