09 Fit Catalytic Converter Engine Code

My 2009 Fit intermittently has the engine light on. It will be on for about three months or so and then turn off for a week or two and then come back on for three moths or so. I used the AutoZone code reader and it says it's the catalytic converter. The car still gets fine mileage and I don't notice any smells. Could run a bit better though but not sure if that's the cat or just it's age/miles- around 140k I think.

I have the car at the dealer right now for the airbag recall and wonder if it's worth having them diagnose it? They charge $135 just to check it- that cost would go towards service, however I wouldn't want to pay their cost to replace the cat an would likely just pop one on from Rock auto myself. Is it worth having them check it out, since it could be an 02 sensor or something or will they just tell me the same thing I got when I ran the code?-"says you need a new cat."

I live in LA but the car still is registered in Texas so I don't have to pass smog right away or anything.

Thanks for your help!

John

Have you experienced a lack of power going up a steep hill ? Several times I've had the gas pedal to the floor with no momentum on steep climb . Thanks

Occasionally it seems a bit underpowered, but maybe not that extreme.
