Honda jazz ge8 flat spots, jerking....

Hi all. I have Honda jazz ge 2013 1.4 vtec with 57000miles on it and I'm scared that it have either simple fix issue or many expensive.

So two months ago in neitral gear after taking out from gear car start rpm float from 1k to 300rpm at random times.Took off air filter and car stalled but never before. So i disconnected battery pluged back after 3h and issue never came back.

However... When engine is cold and i i changed to gears there's flat spots in power, delay in acceleration. Next the biggest problem is every time i change gears well 90% on releasing clutch and applying gas it stutters for 2 seconds. Rpms stay good no issues. Car been put to code reader no codes. When starting from cold car smells quite a lot of a petrol and i think my mpg is down (recently driving more in city), when driving on motorway before i had 56mpg now on 50mile trip 46mpg with 98octane.
K&N air filter, gearbox oil, engine oil been changed and filters.
Some say valve adjustment, spark plugs, ignition coils.
But i start to think Air leak, maybe smtn with MAF... I hope and don't think headgasket.

Any advise!? I really don't want to go trough all the suggested list before then its easier to sell it but i love that car so much.

I've never worked on a Jazz, but it sounds like you're experiencing a "hunting idle" where, for one reason or another, the engine can't maintain RPMs and the computer is trying to offset the problem but cannot do so effectively because of how big the problem is. In vehicles and equipment with carburetors, that's a common fault - I fixed a hunting idle on our ride-on mower just two days ago

Don't worry! There are lots of things you can do!
If you're able to do so, you can remove the spark plugs and look at them to see if they (or just one) are light in color, or wet, black all over. How they look will give you an idea as to what's wrong.

How long have you had this problem? How long have you had the K&N air filter? What was the last thing done to the car (fixing/changing) before the problem started?

Thanks for response.
Well spark plugs are rated to 100k miles but there are horror stories... If it would be easy to replace i would... First what i will probably do is to change them soon and then ask garage to check ignition coils. I have a car for 1.5 years, bought it with K&N filter. When the problem happened nothing has been changed its pretty much stock. P.S. Funny enough today while driving stutter didn't happen so much but still so annoying.

I don't know the plug issue to be common outside of the USDM L15A7. Regarding the air filter, what i've heard is that if they don't cause trouble just from their design, they can mess up stuff when you oil them (if it's the type that you oil). I've certainly dealt with that with my motorcycle..

Proceed however you see fit! If you can afford a mechanic it wouldn't hurt to get their help. Would you be willing to check your transmission fluid level too?

I run a K&N filter on my Fit since almost the beginning (~9 years ago).

If you oil it the right way, there should be no problem with the filter.

Just my personal experience.

Sounds like you have a bad coil pack. I’d buy a cheap coil from an aftermarket supplier and swap it between your cylinders until the problem is gone, once you know what one it is you can either leave the cheap coil in there or order an expensive oem one. I’ve had a $40.00 spectra coil in my car for quite some time with no issues, my car was experiencing the same symptoms intermittently for a long time before I figured it out.

Weirdly this weekend i was messing with air intake... Well unplugged maf cable (bare in mind not the first time) but car was running. And day after it gave me engine light. Air intake and something else with intake. Cleared them and car isn't so laggy anymore, still little jerking occasionally . 💁‍♂️ It probably did throw code because it was running with unpluged maf as before i cleaned it without engine running.

@Frenzal If you don't mind (minor thread jack, maybe still relevant, sorry OP) what method do you use for oiling yours? Between cone filters and foamies used for off-road I've heard all kinds of methods. Some dudes soak their filters, then let them dry in the sun for three days. Some spray 'em then blow them dry with a compressor. I've heard others say for foamies they put them in a ziplock, add a tbsp of filter oil, then massage it in I bet there's someone out there that spray oil in the air like perfume, closes their eyes and walks the filter through. Finish with a kiss and a whisper: make me fast.

For me, I spray it, blow it out, and sit it indoors on a paper towel wad for 3 days. The Keihin FCR carb is a sensitive b*****. I've had zero success oiling any kind of filter and using it the same day.

@OP Glad to hear about the unplugged maf! I hope that cleans it up for you. I'm pretty stoked when a car runs well with the maf unplugged (before the code pops). I interpret it as meaning that the engine is running well enough to endure a generic air flow preset

No worries that's why community is here for.
On K&N there's official video on youtube how to clean and reapply their oil. I used the same method and let it dry by the window in sun normal room temp.
When i unpluged MAF it did stall, then i started it again and qickly runned to block intake with my hand and then it was running.

I just follow K&N instructions. After washing, rinsing and shaking the extra water off, I let it dry for a whole night. Then I oil it by the instructions, wipe off any excess oil from the sides of the filter (frame of the filter), and finally just gently put a paper on the filter media to remove any excess oil. Then put it right back in the car.

Never had a problem on the Fit. And I do the same thing on my 05 Accord. Never had a problem either.

In the end, you just have to be careful not to put too much oil on the filter.
