Gas odor coming from fuel tank
Gas odor coming from fuel tank
Hello and tyia,
So, I purchased a used 2013 fit as a daily driver, 100k miles, great car. Started smelling gas, especially when the tank was full. I started from the fuel rail and traced it back, didn't see anything.
I just pulled the fuel pump 2 hours ago. As soon as I took off that metal lid that reveals the pump I knew I was in the right area. I inspected the pump and the rubber seal, lines etc. and STILL don't see a leak or where it could be coming from. The rubber seal looks new, no cracks in anything anywhere.
At this point what would you do? Should I be looking somewhere else? I am really stumped. The gas odor is definitely coming from this area and not the motor for certain.
Again, thank you for the help.

It is possible but, I ran the car and got the fuel sloshing around in the tank with simple stop and goes with that metal cover off hoping to see something leaking....but alas, nothing. The odor is so strong I would have thought I'd see something. I was especially hoping to find something faulty with the pump assembly, gasket... anything. It'd be an easy fix and peace of mind. For 100$ I may replace anyway but I want to see what transpires from this post.
Loose spark plugs are most likely your problem, on startup it will smell like gas because the spark plugs are near the cabin air intake. Look up hone fit spark plug change on youtube and you can do it yourself, bit of a hassle but not too bad. When you pull the coils off you'll most likely notice they look a little burnt and they smell like gas. gen 1 and 2 fits suffer from this issue. Many write ups about this and videos. The updated torque spec to rectify this issue is 20ft.lbs on the spark plugs. Seems high, but no one has had issue after torqueing to that spec. This also depends on if it's a fresh gas smell or a burnt or not completely burnt smell of gas. If you can tell the difference that is. Hope this helps and reply if you find the source of the smell. If you need further help hunting down this issue feel free to PM me.
