How to buy Windshield Glass - No installation.
How to buy Windshield Glass - No installation.
Hello, I am in the US. Does anybody know or has ever purchased a windshield (glass) only, without having it installed? I have some rust repair I need to do before I install a new window, so can't have it installed by a shop. I've been watching the local Pick a Part (3 hours away) to see if any would come up, but so far nothing anywhere in the State. Safelite will do for $420, which is great, but like I said, I need some time to do the repairs after the broken windshield is taken out, plus they are three hours away and won't do remote installation.
Thanks.
Thanks.
I'm curious if you're going to do the rust repair yourself or have a body shop do the rust repair and painting for you before the glass installation? I'm also curious if you have glass coverage on your car insurance policy? If you're covered, it would sure make life easier and less costly for the glass at least!
Auto glass companies are usually very common in most areas and work with body shops to provide windshields and installations. You can probably find an auto glass company near you, maybe through a body shop, and have them order and install a new windshield when you're ready.
Another option is if your current windshield is ok, you might ask that glass company you find, to try and remove yours, and reinstall it when you're ready. Our windshields are glued in, so you can't always remove one without damaging it though.

Pull the old windshield, do your body repairs, then just take it to a glass shop when your ready, glued in windshields
Should be done by a pro, and it's hard to buy the good adhesive on the open market.
I'm a big DIY person but since I don't know your background,,,, thought I'd say something.
The strength of the roof and a-pillars is dependent on the front glass install.
FYI, avoid body filler in the wind shield channel, it's a job for TIG and lot of careful grinding. Any filler needs to
be the tough metalized stuff from a professional supply shop (I believe NAPA used to carry it )
Good luck and take pictures!
