Hello to all, just posting to this forum for the first time for assistance on a potentially big major issue.
I was trying to replace my spark plugs and coils this week. The second one from the passenger side came out looking a bit toasted, with the coil bent at an angle. When I installed the new plug and tried to seat the new coil, the coil just would not sit all the way down. I dropped a scope down and saw that the opening looked off centered. Looking up this issue, I read that the previous install may have overtightened/cross-threaded and stripped the threads, from rust, or used the wrong size.
Is it ok to bend the new coil a little bit to try to accommodate the angled off-set? Not sure if this also has to do with it, but I am also getting that well-known gas smell via the dash vents. The first spark plug from the passenger side was already loose when I removed it, so hopefully the smell was from that.
All the solutions I read sounded very expensive, including a cylinder head replacement($$$$). Thanks in advance. Bottom coil is the bent one
I would want to use a spark plug thread cleaner first just to be sure it isn't something simple. If not simple then likely a loose spark plug caused this damage and was violently ejected. If so then you need either a new head or try a helicoil.
A good cleaning with carb cleaner and a nylon chamber brush(See gun store) will fo a good job cleaning the hole.
You can buy a cheap endo scope/bore scope off ebay and look in the hole to see just how bad it is..
I am not a helicoil fan, but most of what I work on is not normal stuff,, so there's that.
For heads ,, I use a TIme-Sert not a helicoil . You will have to pull the head(Its very
hard to get the aluminum fluff from retapping and drilling etc in out of a chamber.)
But time-serts are a permanent fix that won't gall or recut the threads on your plugs.
If I was doing it the head would come off and all 4 plug holes would get a time-sert (stainless steel)
and Locktite sleeve lock on the insert when installing to make it permanent.
