Question iPod through USB "incompatible"

I have an old version iPod and tried to hook it up through the USB to no avail. The display on the stereo told me "incompatible vers". Anyone else have this problem? I'm assuming I'll just need to get a new iPod at some point to fix the issue but I'm just slightly annoyed.

It might just be that you need to update the firmware on your iPod. Check page 130 of your owner's manual.

Why upgrade just for the Fit? Just go to newegg.com and buy a 8gb flash drive for 20 bucks and you'll have an 8gb hdd for your Fit. =D

Because you can't make smart playlists on a flash drive

Of course you can still get a cable and play it through the AUX jack.

Agreed that's the best thing of the new Fit. instead of leaving my $185 8gb Nano in the car I can just leave a $20 8gb flash drive! Sure I don't get iTunes and smart playlists... but I think I'll manage

I've got some questions about how the USB thing works. First, If i'm using a flash drive will it remember where I was when i turned the car off last? Also, will it recognize any size flash drive? 32gb?

If using an ipod or similar device will it turn the device off when the car is shut off or will i have to do that manually?

I'm not sure about the flash drive remembering your spot, but the manual says it recommends flash drives over 256 MB. It also says you are limited to 700 folders or 65535 files though, which seem like some arbitrary numbers. I doubt that it will turn off an iPod when you turn the car off, because it's just like hooking the cable to iTunes. You get a message on the iPod saying it's ok to disconnect, but if you turn the car off, it should act like it's unplugged and the iPod will keep running off the battery until 5 minutes of inactivity.

My iPod shuts off a few seconds after turning off the ignition. And...yes it does remember your last point of play when you turn the car on again.

2^16 = 65,536 so they're using 16 bits of memory to number/address the files

Ahh, thanks. You'd figure that a former computer science major would figure that out. I guess that's why I switched to Forensic Science!

The stereo will remember the current song when you switch off the ignition.

Yes. My daughter's old nano is the only family iPod that works in our new Fit. Oh well. She gets my Mini til I get a new iPod. There are worse things....

awesome, I was kind of concerned because it said fifth generation or newer. I know it says Nano but the "original" Nano came out just before the fifth generation iPod. Thanks for the info!

Question MP3 or AAC?

So I've taken the suggestion of getting a flash drive until I want to upgrade my iPod. Anyone know if I have to convert the files to MP3 format from AAC in order for them to play through my Fit?
Thanks!
