For months I've been looking forward to my Fit Sport AT, Silver. But I found a good deal on really my favorite car under $25,000, the '09 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition.
Thank you fitfreakers for all the good info here. Very tough decision - the car that makes the most economic sense or a pricier car that I like better?

If it's anything like my VW it'll be a lot sooner than 40k. Checkout the vwvortex.com forums and read up. Also check out the delta reliability and all the review sites. Nothing drives like a VW and no cars in their price range will match their interior, bonuses and extras (it's really an Audi) but if you're after reliability: run and run fast. VW's not your car unless you don't mind fixing things and paying premium to do such. Beside that, you'll absolute LOVE your car and most of the VW fans in vwvortex wouldn't trade their VW's for nothing.

 

The VW is the car I WANT. Honda was the car I SHOULD GET.
There's something about the VW that just fits my personality.

Cool features on the VW - heated seats, sat radio, 6 disc changer, heated washer nozzles (nice touch!), 60-40 split rear seats with center armrest/pass through that has 2 cupholders, stablity control, traction control and a couple of other electronic safety deals, single zone climate control.

I love the VW's transmission, the DSG - it's simply awesome. The 2.0 liter turbo engine (same as in the GTI) is fantastic. 0-60 in about 6.9 sec. with just 2 liters displacement is great. It's the same engine that's in the entry level Passat, their new Tiguan compact SUV, the Audi A3 and A4, the GTI and the GLI - but it's cheaper than any of those. Fuel economy is really quite good - I expect 28mpg combined city/highway

And they'll only make about 12,500 of these Wolfsburg Editions.

I've test driven well over a dozen cars (Yaris, '08 Fit manual, '08 Fit auto, '09 Fit, tC, xB, Rio5, Impreza, Mercedes C300, Accord LX-P and EX-L, CR-V, Rabbit, Jetta -TDI & 2.5, Mazda 3 hatch). The Jetta (with the 2.5 litre 170 hp I-5) and the Accord EX-L were tied at #1, but I wanted to save some money so I focused on the Honda Fit. Well a few things turned me off on the Fit. One is no traction control (unless you get the Nav, which I didn't want). Another is shitty brakes. The fit takes about 195 feet to stop from 70 mph. Some minivans beat that. Plus, it's very light - which wouldn't be too good in an accident. Then, I saw that they were offering an '09 Wolfsburg Jetta with the 2.0T engine. I haggled the $23,294 sticker down to $21,539. Got their interest rate down by a point (still not too low at 4.99%). Done deal. Ironic thing is - I never test drove it! In fact, I've never test driven any car with the 2.0T engine! The Jetta TDI (diesel) has the DSG tranny, so I know what that's like.

 

Oh, and VW gives you free scheduled maintenance for 36,000 miles on all their '09's. Not a bad deal.

I recognize I'm rolling the dice with reliability. But it's an informed, calculated risk.

 

Never look back, just keep moving! Good luck and have FUN most of all. Life is too short to second-guess yourself. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my car and I wish everyone could feel the same way. I feel sheepish that I am so lucky to have the car I wanted, that's how much I love it. If the Volkie is your one true love for a car right now, then go for it. Vrrooom!

 

I've had zero problems with my GTI over the past couple of years even in extreme weather. This is my ski car. You'll love your VW!

Have fun man! We really liked my wife's 06 Jetta and we LOVE her 07 Passat wagon with the 2.0T. You'll simply LOVE that powertrain. It has gobs and gobs of power if you need it, and great fuel economy if you drive it in a reasonable manner. We got an honest 33 highway MPG on a recent trip and that included a side trip with lots of spirited driving on a twisty road, along with crusing speeds around 70-75 MPH. With prolonged cruising around 60 MPH I figured it would get high 30's no problem. The really nice thing? If you need to pass, simply drop the pedal and you're doing 80-85 before you even know it. This powertrain can REALLY get you into trouble if you aren't careful and because it's a VW, it LIKES cruising at those speeds

You'll love the car. Oh and for the record, both of our VW's have been extremely reliable.

I'm in the process of selling my 98 Jetta K2.

I love VW and always have. I'm actually a member over at the aforementioned vwvortex.com forums.

Problem, just as others mentioned, is reliability. I love everything else about that Jetta, how it drives, the nice goodies like heated seats, all auto down windows, etc. But they just fall apart, its too bad.

I hope yours doesn't fall apart on you!

I'm just glad I'm not the only one on the Fit forum who considers other vehicles. Honestly, if it weren't for the a-holes I dealt with, I'd probably own a GTI at this point. Dealers DO make a difference as someone else has pointed out...

I suspect that if I were driving a GTI, I'd be having too much fun to worry about the fuel economy
