My GE8 made me grin today..

So I'm heading uphill on a windy, 2-lane highway that scales a mountain range between my home & my girl friends' today and get my 1st "race." While rounding a steep uphill turn going 60 I see a blue Aveo pull onto the highway headed my direction... At a glance the headlights were brighter & bluish & it had black aftermarket wheels.. Didn't look back to see more right away, it Was an Aveo.

I'm currently in "D" with it in 4th around 3200 rpms or so with enough gusto to not need 3rd to continue my ascent... but whats this? The Aveo is flat out, matting its 1.6L dohc 106 hp monster (I know, sad.. Honda made 160 hp B16's 20 YEARS AGO!)

I think little of it since he's still about 200 yards back & I don't intend on romping it with barely 2k miles on the odo.. but he's still flooring this gerbil-powered fugly fugger & closing..

I had my girl, a hatch full of fireworks & weekend getaway goodies & a full tank & decided to let him have it.. He was taking nice making smooth apexing turns to carry max momentum & got about 3 carlengths from my bumper when I floor it in "S" mode with 4th selected.

This stops his closing very quickly & I begin to gain ground.. but only slowly.. I look over to my passenger who just smiles & nods.. the 10-4 to go as fast as you want for a minute, big guy.. Sweet.. I tap the "-" minus paddle & feel the L15A7's revs rocket up.. Hella i-VTEC, son! from about 63-85ish mph I ride out 3rd and open up a gap of 8 Aveos or about 2+ buses. I tap the "+" and drop down to 60 again & wait for it... About 15 seconds later I get the inevitable "ricer" flyby.. but with a flatulent "Bwaaaahh" too! Guy wasn't stock & was alone, had at least an exhaust, a dickload of stickers on the rear hatch & quarter windows with a nice drop & 15" or 16" black rims...

I felt awesome because we were just talking about what I wanted to do to the Fit 10 minutes earlier. I told her that with some bolt-ons & lighter wheels this thing should have OK pep.. (Won't ever be like the old LT1 Z28 or Integra GS-R without a turbo or swap tho) I'm very pleased with the Fit as my 1st new car, and beating a modded econohatch competitor in your stock car always feels good.. even though Aveo's aren't known to be terrors at the drag strip.

Now c'mon aftermarket companies, give us some engine mods! Hopefully HASport will release K-series engine mounts for the GE8 chassis someday.. Oh, to have a spare $6-8 grand if & when they're released lol.

But whatever. There was an article a couple months ago about a company doing a 2.2 supercharged Ecotec swap into an Aveo, so be on the lookout for more tasteless teens trying to pull a K20fit on their Chetty A***os. Nice win.

Have a similar highway story involving two frat boys in a modded beetle, but why celebrate such a sad victory. What kind of tough guys drive newer modded VW Bugs? Tough Guys that wear pink shirts and rock man purses. It would be like bragging about beating up a girl.

Talking

congrats on the win.... yet not totally a street race. I feel the same enjoyment when someone is tailing me on the open highway with other lanes available and finally go around me. Miles later I catch up because of their constant hard braking while going around the twisties. I then pass them downshifting and accelerating past them through the corner with a huge grin on my face!

nice.. street racing is ok as long as it's "safe". if there is such a thing lol.

i love driving in "S" rather than "D".. the response is so quick above 4k.

interesting, all the forums ive visited for all the eco cars im considering all have similar stories. i beat a (fit/aveo/kio/yaris etc..) in a street race. i love how half the time the other car doesnt even know there is a race going on. half the riced out eco cars out there have no actual engine mods, just a bunch of rice-o-rific cosmetic crap to make them (presumably) look fast.

anyway, the story gave me a good laugh.

LOL@AVEO!

My most impressive win with my 89 wheel horses of fury was a Hyundai Tiribuon GT V6 approximately ~2007ish. We had a fair start at 65MPH on I-71, he started a countdown. 3...2...1...I dropped her into in sport mode, killed the A/C, floored it, and yanked way ahead of him, he kept up within a few carlengths, but I could hear his engine over mine in the process, and Tiribuon V6's are pretty quiet. WOT up until 115MPH, the Hyundai couldn't pass me until around ~95, then he stayed really close behind/beside me, until 110, then he bailed...minutes later I found out why...the fuzz.

The conversation I had with the officer was hilarious:
"Do you have any idea how fast you were going?"
"As much as 89WHP can do?"
"You were going 115MPH! You really need to slow down, speeding beyond 30MPH over the limit is an automatic arrest...excuse me, did you say 89 horsepower?"
"Yes sir"
"How does it actually go that fast? Is it some kind of special engine?"
"No sir, it's actually the smallest one Honda makes"
"Well...I'm going to have to write you up...95MPH in a 65MPH, consider yourself lucky that you aren't in cuffs, speeding beyond 30MPH over the limit is automatic incarceration in the state of ohio"
"Wow, thank you officer!"
"License and registration please..."

I don't know if he was just trying to scare me with the arrest threat but I'm glad he reduced the speed, it ended up being $215 instead of $380 + supposedly an arrest.

Edit: Oh I forgot the funniest part, when the cop clocked me on his laser gun he literally did no less than five jumping jacks while pointing at the ground and making an angry face.

not sure in your state, but most states it's an automatic arrest and also they will throw in reckless driving along with the speeding ticket. consider yourself lucky.
and wtf? GD3's only have 89whp???

probably around that. i think its only 109 at the crank, and an automatic loses a fair amount of power. 89 does sound a little low though.

yeah that means the GE8 probably only has around 95whp(maybe a little more, but less than 100).

got mines dyno'd a couple weeks back.
106.6whp.
I wouldn't believe it if I wasn't there myself
Considering my RSX was only able to pull 179whp stock.

Oh yeah? Thats pretty good. Was the car stock? Thats the thing about Dynos though, you probably could have had a stock GD3 with you that same day, and run on the same dyno, and come out with higher numbers than 89. I guess dyno results are never very accurate unless you got a stock car dynoed also to have number to base off of.

Lol, like others have said streetracing is bad.

But this wasn't really a race since we both didn't start nose to nose (wouldn't of been really fair since he was accelerating 'hard', I was cruising) or a REAL race from a dig. And there was virtually no traffic so it was a pretty safe environment to go fast. So from the hit to finish, I opened up about 6 Aveolenghts lol.

But yeah, ANY car with more than 20 lbs / bhp is going to be slow, but the Fit with I/H/E should eclipse that mark like many stock 92-00 Civics I'm more accustomed to driving and roll on most any stock econobox lol.

Yea it was stock. I was actually really, really, really surprised. Considering when I had my RSX, most S's were dynoing around 175-180whp. Haven't really seen that many stock GE8's dyno, so I don't know what the norm is.
Also I think the whole crack down on how manufacturers rate their hp#'s may have helped in getting a more true hp figure.
I dunno, maybe I just have a beast.
