So after my 1st oil change I sent in a sample to Blackstone labs. Here are my results after 5,373 miles with the maintenance minder at 60%. Thoughts?

Nice post. Thanks. This makes me happier about my decision to change the oil before the Maintenance Minder hit 0. I just changed it over the weekend at 6,700 miles with 50% showing. As someone who changes their oil around the 4,000 mile mark, I was getting quite nervous about letting it get so high.

 

Glad i decided to do the same, changed mine at 60%...

 

Guess I will change mine before taking that long drive next month. At a about 4500 miles or so.

Can you bring your own oil to the Honda dealer or will they always use their oil? I want to run Amsoil.

I changed mine at 20% at 5k miles....and yesterday at 15% at 10k....

 

Mine's at 3700miles wit 50% on the oil life indicator, should I change now?? Or wait till 5000 miles?

 

what oil did you guys use? filter?

does the oil indicator reset automatically ?

 

my oil life indicator was at 20% when i was at 3200 miles, and i changed it then.

The oil indicator has to be reset by the technician i believe, though there might be something in the manual to help you reset it yourself.

 

This might also explain why i felt the car to feel a lot smoother after I had the oil changed....

 

you can do it yourself on the odometer push the trip meter stalk till you get the oil meter up. then just push down on the stalk and it should reset.

 

Resetting the Engine Oil Life Display

If maintenance service is done by someone other than your dealer, reset the maintenance minder as follows:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position.

2. Press the select/reset knob repeatedly until the engine oil life is displayed.

3. Press the select/reset knob for about 10 seconds. The engine oil life and the maintenance item code(s) will blink.

4. Press the select/reset knob for another 5 seconds. The maintenance item code(s) will disappear, and the engine oil life will reset to ‘‘ 100. ’’

 

So... I'm confused, the lab report said it's better to change the oil as soon as possible, but then isn't Honda's break-in oil supposed to stay in for at least the first 5k miles? I'm at 3,700 and my dealer said to change it at 3,750 but the I swear I read somewhere the Fit's first oil change is at 5k. What to do?

 

I am at 50% at almost 6500 miles. The email I received from Honda and the owner's manual (I think) both say to wait until you get the orange wrench.

 

Nice job getting the analysis done. How much was it? Might have been nice to see a little more data. Here's a site for some good info. The Motor Oil Bible eBook Some parts need to be taken with a grain of salt. I only read the free stuff and didn't pay for the extra, but it has was worth reading.

 

You must drive like a maniac, most people do their first oil change around 5000 and the oil life meter still reads 50 or 60 percent.

Remember guys the meter doesn't analyze the oil at all, it just counts the numbers of revolutions and throttle position and determines the life of the oil on those factors. If you were to wait till it got to 0 or 10 percent you can probably go 12,000+ on the original abrasive oil. It just sounds like a way to save honda money on oil changes, and by the time that mechanical problems show up after waiting that long to change the oil your warranty will be out. Change it at 5000 and play it safe.
