"The train's engine caught on fire and the Fit was totaled"

wtf? I'm never riding on an Amtrak. How does a train engine catch on fire from hitting a 2600lbs fit?

Sounds to me Amtrak needs to put cow catchers back on the front of their trains....

other than stupidity of the driver, was it the open diff that caused the car to 'get stuck' in the first place?

almost sounds like one wheel was off the ground due
to angle of the ramp leading up to the tracks while she
drove up on an angle? not sure... but poor fit.

yeah, it seems kinda bizarre. I would love to see a video of it happening.

I'm not sure how this backs up the safety engineering. For all we know, if she were still in that car she would probably be dead.

A lot of the damage that you see is from the fire. But look at the driver's side compartment...it's relatively intact and obviously the airbags would've deployed all around her, if she was inside. That said, I would bet she would've been fine.

No what I think happened is the train hit the FIT and pushed it bouncing over the tracks which ruptured the Fits gas tank. The train was over the Fits spilled fuel, so it LOOKed like the train caught fire. The train is diesel which actually does not catch fire all that easily and the tanks are low and about in the center

Has anyone seen these Pics??

I can't find the article again,(so I'm glad I saved the photos when I did)but the article said that the fit was rear-ended and pushed off of the over-pass.

I think you have it right. No matter what this looks like I would bet if the Fit was loaded with 4 people, all 4 passengers would have been killed.
The impact of that train traveling 40 mph would have generated probably 15G or more and that's the lesser end of the dead by impact range besides the reduction in inside volume. All they had to do to the train was repaint the nose.
bIG SQUASHES LITTLE.
