Problem.. any suggestions?

soo i have a pretty big snag. i did some math and i figured out that with car payments, insurance, rent, and groceries (if i plan on moving, which is something i'm going to do) i will have to have a job that pays over $20 an hour. and the only way i can get that is if i stay here in a big money oilfield town, but thats the last thing i want to do. so do you guys think i should sell the Fit and try and find something cheap so i can move down south? or would i lose too much money off the car and it wouldnt be worth it and just stay here and work..

Thanks guys, i really appreciate any advice you have.

How much did you owe on the car and how much is it worth? Also, maybe sell your rims and go back to stock and use that money to pay down the car note.

What do you do for a living? $20 per hour jobs that don't require years of training include driving delivery trucks and (including tips) working in some of the nicer restaurants. Lots of these jobs are still available in Calgary and Edmonton, not sure about Vancouver.

Where are you attending school? Can your rent costs be offset by getting room mates? The restaurant gigs might offer the required shift flexibility to manage your finances and keep the car. I'm thinking some place like the Keg.

Do you have any friends in the big money town? I found I can live anywhere, if I have some buddies to hang out with.

Basically your question that you need to answer is "Is the Fit worth living in a spot that you don't like?"

If you really really want to keep the Fit, find good, viable reasons to stay/go to the big money oil town. If you cannot, you will most likely just be miserable.

I did the math too and 20/hr is a little over 40grand/year. jeeeezzzzzzzz, you are expensive consider roommates to help with living costs.

i'm still in highschool for another 2 weeks, but after grad i'm going to try and find a good college where i can study criminology.

and to answer cab, i need to have a lot of money so i can just barely skim by. this town is REALLY expensive. minumum $2500 a month for a crappy apartment, dorms are about the same.

i've lived in the oilfield town basically all my life and i've always hated it. the only reason i was going to stay here after graduation is because of my car, it would be the only place i can afford because i'd bunk with my parents. there is just no possible way i can keep my car and move though. it's a tough choice

40K per year may be ok before taxes. But if you think taxes are high in New Youk state try Canada---- especially places like BC. That 40K is before taxes. And the cost of living in Vancouver is second only to NYC and LA.

Life is full of choices. What you decide can lead to many paths and more choices. Nobody here can decide what's right for you. It's your life.

i think i'm going to keep the car, i have no choice. i'd lose too much and i'd still be making payments on something i don't even have for a long time after. if i could get enough money, the car would be gone. but no dice.

Pay down the car, live with the 'rents while going to school, work enough to pay off the car.

It'll suck for a year or two, but don't lose sight of what you want!

it's your life, so do what you want to do, but I would say sell the car.
You might lose money initially, but that happens. I'm guessing you could probably sell it for around 14k. And get a bike to ride everywhere. You'll save money from not paying insurance/gas/maintenance.
