Interior Color Change

OK, I'm thinking of biting the bullit and changing the interior color of my ride. I have done some research and have found the SEM Color dye to do this. I know it will require some work but, I just freaking hate the black velcro interior on this car!!! I'm going to remove all interior plastic trim and redo it in grey. I just recently bought a complete set of Clazzio seat covers in black and will be going to the solid grey. I also plan on replacing the weird (velcro) fabric on the door panels with a 3 or 4 way strech vinyl that is made for interior upgrades/replacement (maybe in a shade darker than the exisiting grey trim). The carpet and the dash will remain black as a contrast.

FYI (reasoning) I have a BMW 325CI in grey and just love the color (with a black dash). I am so happy with the Fit, Just disappointed that I didn't have a choice in the interior color. So now I'm determined to personalize my ride.

I'm thinking the cost will be around $200 (materials) plus my time.

OK, am I insane, should I do this?? I have done alot of mods on other cars and I think this would be unique.

you can probably get a good portion of the interior plastic bits for less than $200... or find someone with a base fit who's looking for a combo color interior as well, and make the swap.

time consuming, but significantly better looking in the long run.

you can always tell the difference between a dyed or painted interior, and the original stuff, no matter how well done it is.

So I can buy the interior pieces in grey (or other colors)? The $200 I spoke of was for my materials to make the change. The door panel will be my biggest challenge. There is someone on the forum that has done the fabric change already and it will be tough at best. I have already contacted a couple of salvage dealers to see if I can get the door panels so I can experiment without trashing mine. But again, there are different plastic panel that will fit (pun intended) the us GE in different colors?

all US GE's no matter the trim level come with the same interior materials and color.

There is no base gray interior.

Honda's site and my eyes have said otherwise...

had to really dig on honda.com Looks like the Fit Base and the Fit Sport have the same seats but different materials, the Base being lighter than the Sport.

Edit: I dont think this was the case in 2009 though, can anyone confirm? I am pretty sure there was only one interior choice across the board.

Yes. The seats and the door inserts. Very dark gray. The actual fabric, material, pattern is identical, but the color in the Base (I have one) is lighter than the black in the Sport models.

There is even that bit of blue in the fabric of the gray, but it doesn't show up as much as the blue does on the black Sport fabric.

The door panels are the SAME as the Sport otherwise, as is the rest of the vehicle for coloration.

2009, same interior photos as used for 2010:

I wouldn't paint the plastic interior. I suppose it depends on how good you are at doing it, and how careful you and other passengers are at getting in/out and loading/unloading cargo.

That back cargo area ledge will take a lot of scuffing over time, and that can take off any coating. Then it looks like crap. Scuffed plastic is one thing, scuffed plastic with paint missing showing a different color underneath emphasizes the crap look.

You'll still have black seat belts.

I'd stick with black/gray.

The two-tone black/gray like here:
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/gaug...tml#post740214

Since we don't have pics of it installed, here is a completely different cover in a completely different car, but the Toyota Camry 2002 image shows a black door panel, with the light gray upper window/roof area and their black side/gray insert covers (scroll down):
Toyota Seat Cover Gallery

Looks good, right?

Now, the next step would be to consider aftermarket Weather Tech in gray, or carpet mats in gray:
2009 Honda Fit Floor Mats

Yes, you can even order the gray carpet mats for the cargo area, one example:
LLOYD® - Ultimats™ Custom Floor Mats

And they have the option to have the edges of the mats covered in a vinyl, and they have a silver option. That could be kind of nice with the silver bits we have in our cars. They also have black, and white (and other colors) of that vinyl mat trim.

In order, you want the seat covers first. Have the door vinyl matched to the seat covers. Then use a sample of the door vinyl to try to match up to the carpet mats.

For best results, you'll want carpet samples, because they have MANY shades of gray.

You will then have lightened up the entire interior, and it's all immediately removable to return to stock condition.

Consider car accessories like clothing accessories. If you have a black suit, you can change the color accents with shoes, belts, shirts, ties, overcoats, hats, giving the suit a different look...even though the suit is the same suit.

Black shirt, red tie.
White shirt, charcoal tie.
Charcoal shirt, white tie.
French blue shirt, black tie with doodads.

That suit jacket will look very different with those other accessories.
