question about axelback and Short ram intakes

I recently installed the HKS HI POWER axelback and I feel a loss in low end torque. I know there are a few of you here who also have this exhaust. Do you guys feel the same thing? Sort of a lag in throttle response too (prolly because of the loss of back pressure)

I also want to install my PRM intake, will this further decrease the low end power, namely in the 2500 - 3000 rpm.

Yes both mods shift the power band to the right.

I am thinking of getting the same axleback. Is the lag significant? When do you notice it most?

Where did you buy yours? How much if you don't mind? I found a place in Mississauga and they want $450 + taxes. A lot of money for sound and losing some response eh.

Thanks

bill

There are things you can do to help response: throttle controller, throttle body, and lighter flywheel.

I'm curious, how does the PRM CAI decrease low end torque? It seems to me that the lessened restriction would provide a benefit across the entire band.

I've got one, and I'm totally satisfied with it. But I only drove the car for a week or so before I installed it, so I really don't have any basis for comparison, especially since I was babying it during the break-in period.

did u feel a difference compared to stock before u installed it? I'm actually looking for power in the low range, so bascially when you are babying the car. do you have the short intake or the long version of the intake?

I don't remember any option for short or long when I ordered it. Here it is, maybe you can tell by looking:

I certainly didn't notice any loss of power. Whether or not there's a noticeable gain, I can't be sure. I only drove it stock for about a week, and since it was new, I wasn't really getting on it too much. I'm certainly happy with the performance now, but some gain may just be perceived because it sounds so damned good!

I'm a 45 y/o father of two kids, so I didn't really want a really noisy intake. From what I'd read, the PRM is one of the louder ones. So I was surprised once I got it installed that it wasn't as loud as I expected. Just putting around town you don't even notice it much. But put your foot into it and it's got a nice healthy growl.

Now I just need a new axleback to match it on the other end...

Hey blackvitzers. If you have time could you answer my questions? Thanks.

hi black3sr, I bought it used off a forum member here locally. I bought both the axel back and the PRM intake from him. THe intake used to be the first version, but the guy modified it so it is now a short ram. I haven't installed it yet. Will be doing so next week.

If you can find it used, it would be a much better deal. I got both items for about 200 CDN.

JeffChap,
that's the short ram version of the intake. And its good to hear that u didn't feel a loss of power even when you are babying the car still. I will be installing it next week and I'll let you guys know what I feel of it later.

I'm suprised an axelback has any effect at all on a stock engine aside from the change in exhaust note. If I remember the dyno sheet it showed an all around 2hp increase but I could be wrong.

update
PRM installed. The throttle lag is no longer noticeable and the loss in low end power from just installing the axelback before is also no longer noticeable. You can hear a difference in sound but I haven't rev'ed my car over 3000 rpm to really notice it. The exhaust note is even louder now with the intake installed.

The power loss you feel in the 2500 3200 RPM range is due to the VTEC transition when all 8 intake valves are opening.... There is a loss of flow velocity that is more noticeable because of the free flowing intake....It doesn't happen at all on a super charged engine.

with the intake, the throttle is more responsive and the loss of power is not as noticeable.

when I had just the exhuast installed I do feel a power loss between the 2500-3200 range. So, the intake did help recover the throttle feel between that range of RPM
